The parallel ends stop or reduce the edges of the webbing fraying. When you put wide webbing on curved 'biners the edges wear out faster. We don't do this with climbing 'biners because of the strength and weight requirements. To make a 'biner of the shape shown strong enough to pass the CE test would require a 'biner of around 70-80 gm, estimated.

whoever mentioned ice screws had an interesting idea - this could be a cool racking biner - it would hold a bunch of stoppers better than an oval or a D... pricy though.
