I'm going to study abroad next year in Bologna, and I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on where I HAVE to go climb. And are there any indoor gyms in Bologna for bad weather days? (How much do they cost? I have to be a little money conscious since the euro is still kicking the dollars ass. . .) Thanks!

Are you studying abroad for the entire year in Bologna? that is so cool. I intend to take a detour there myself next May during a month-long trip to climb in the south of France. Can't wait to see torre degli asinelli and torre garisendi in person.

sorry i don't know anything about the climbing scene in Bologna specifically  , but there is plenty of great climbing in Italy.

Yup, full year. That means that I've got a lot of time to explore. And I'm pretty sure I'll just happen to trot on up to France, since I've heard the climbing is a little fantastic there too. But since I'll actually be living in Bologna, I'm hoping someone has good ideas for where to go regularly. . .

Hi mosuzi, there are several good climbing areas not so far from Bologna and it is reasonably easy to find a partner to go to climb with. As soon as you can understand some Italian, I encourage you to have a look at
http://www.forum.planetmountain.com/phpBB2/index.php

It is a very active forum and there are several guys from Bologna.

Enjoy your staying in Italy! :D :D :D

Do you think these guys would be up for taking a not great climber out w/them? Or would I be better off searching elsewhere for the moderately experienced climbers in Italy? I definately want to be better, I'm just not yet. . .

No problem, you can find people climbing anything from 4c to 8b there (well... 8b... maybe not really  ) and in general they are very welcoming. How you behave will be far more important than how well you climb!

I can't resist the title of this thread...

Trad climbers don't climb if they are in Bologna, only if they are in Hamburg.

I suspect that boulderers might climb in Bologna.

Sport climbers prefer the areas around Perrier or Mignon. Maybe .... stop it, just stop it.

I just got back from studying in Florence for the last few months, and planned on trying to climb as much as possible while I was there, but unfortunately I did not get out much. There are a few areas to climb in the area but I found it quite difficult to locate climbers and unless you have a car it is very difficult to get anywhere worthwhile. Although I did not get out very much, I did obeserve that there is very little trad climbing, mostly sport, and it is all pretty hard. I dont know that much about the area, maybe the scene in Bologna is better than Florence. Just thought I would share my expirence with ya since I was just there. Good Luck and enjoy Italy, it is a beautiful place with beautiful people. CIAO!!!
