I 'm looking to subscribe to a climbing mag, I picked up a copy of urban climber which i guess is relativley new, anyone have some suggestions?

I get Climbing, Rock and Ice, and Urban Climber... yes, I'm that guy. Rock and Ice frequently has better stories, although lots of people on this site seem to hate both. Climbing also comes out with a gem of an article now and then... both mags could be better in places, but I'm not disappointed that I get them. Urban Climber needs to be refined a little IMHO. I enjoy that it's trying to achieve a more youthful perspective, that of the climbing adict stuck in the city, like myself; however, sometimes it reads as if a 13-year-old kid wrote it. Still, plenty of UCMag's articles are worth looking over, and there's even some good photography. Plus, a good number of my friends have been contributers, so I wouldn't want to bash on it too much.
Most people on RC.com will probably tell you "those mags suck, get Alpinist." You could do that too.

I usually read Rock & Ice and Climbing. For sweet layout content, I turn to Urban Climber.

Yeah, Alpinist is good for looking at mountains and routes that I'll probably never in my lifetime ever climb. I like Urban Climber because I'm just like that: the big city lover while being able to drive to within a few miles of some good crags. And uh, yeah, Rock & Ice and Climbing seem to be a happy median.

I enjoy Outside magazine. The last one I go had an article about Sharma doing Witness the Fitness. Now i know that Outside magazine isn't strictly climibing but it offers some interesting things in each issue, and occasionally climbing. But not the best if you want some great pics i'd go for Rock & Ice. I want to check out Alpinist now.

I get rock and ice, climbing, urban climber, and alpinist - just about every cimbing mag written in english. Luckily I get many of the subscriptions as christmas gifts, so no, im not shelling out all of the the $100+ a year...
Rock and Ice and Climbing each have theyre good months, and by getting both theres plenty of interesting stuf between the two each month. Urban Climber has the distinct shortcoming of not covering trad, like wtf. I just got a subscription to try it out, and it came with abunch of free junk so whatever - ill form a final opinion once i get the other 5 issues.
Alpinist however, is in a league of its own. Its like getting a new book every few months. Although i dont do any alpine climbing, i enjoy the majority of the stuff in it, particularly the bio's and trad stuff. Oh yes and the puff the magic climber article was probably the best thing ive ever read in a magazine. pure genius.
For a beginner however, i think that climbing is the best magazine. When i first started out 4 or so years ago, climbing mag gave me a look into the world that i was entering, and it was quite helpfull.

I'm partial to She Sends and R&I. I really like Alpinist as well, but it's a bit more than I want to pay.
My experience has been that She Sends provides down-to-earth stories about cool people doing cool things. R&I covers the sexy side of climbing, MTV-style, and Alpinist is very thoughtul/artsy.

I have read Climbing and Rock & Ice and enjoyed them both.
I suggest going to blowouts section of www.gearexpress.biz and ordering some back issues ($2.50 each) to see which one you prefer.

Clearly, none of the magazines are superior to the others, why subscribe?
I would be pissed of if the mags in the book shop looked like a better read one month than the copy that arrived in my letter box.
Just find a shop that carries all the mags you like and browse for the best one that month. Still, if you live out in the wop-wops...

I was reading R and I and Climbing at the end of last year to see which one was better, and I decided on climbing. Their stuff just seems more professional, and their website is updated more than once every two months. R and I's got the better pictures though. Last time I was in the gunks, I was at rock and snow and almost bought Inertia 1 and 2 for $25. glad I didn't. When I got home I found out that you can get it, along with a revolution brush set, year of urban climber, and a free t-shirt for the same price. That alone is worth checking out a new mag. Its pretty good so far anyway.
Alpinsist is ill. Puff the magic Climber, lived by the... Oh where the fuck was it? I'd like to see this quality in other mags, but they do say its all reader supported, hence no ads and four times a year. Worth picking up though. Why'd that dude paint his face, does he also work for D.A.R.E. or something? Come on!!
And would someone please tell me if Gripped is any good (I mean worth looking at when I already subscribe to Climbing and UC). The only store that I know of that sells it is Rock and Snow, and that's not nearby, I keep forgetting about it everytime I'm there.

It depends what you want to get out of climbing? Rock and Ice and climbing put out the same stuff every year, but you will get to plan a lot of trips from stuff you see in these magaazines. If you feel like the adventure is the whole reason you started climbing and you are tired of sitting at the crag/gym and you want to be inspired look at the alpinist. All the mags are basically following the climbers at the top of the game doing climbs you will never be capable of. Just buy a lot of old ones on ebay everything that mortal climbers will get out of them hasn't changes in 5 years.

I think the writing in Gripped is superior to both R&I and Climbing, usually. Also, is it my imagination or does anyone else think R&I / Climbing are both afraid to give any gear a poor review?

My opinion....
Urban Climber is for teenie-boppers
Alpinist is sweet if that's your thing. Amazing photos and article, but really only for a special climbing crowd.
For general climbing mags, I think Rock and Ice is much better than Climbing.

I have always been a fan of Rock and Ice, but it is really personal preference. Just read a few issues of each and see which appeals to you.

i second that.
yet i am kinda tired of seeing many articles about west coasts. sometimes i wish those mags talking more about southeast climbing areas like t-wall or looking glass.

I subscribe to Outside, Backpacker and Rock and Ice. Another general adventure mag is National Geo Adventure, it has a lot of trips and awesome pics.
