I am buying new shoes, and can't decide. Which do you prefer?

Laces. Last thing you need on that funky weighted heel hook is to hear "SSSHHHHKKK!" I prefer laces and don't like slip-ons either. Laces are the most secure. However, don't take my or anybody's word for it. Does the store have a small wall for you to try them out on? If not, go to an REI. They always have a wall. Don't take too much advice. I say laces, you can probably bank on that, but go try a bunch out and pick the one that feels best. Steve

What are you getting the shoes for. That would help a lot with your decision. If you are getting them for bouldering sport climbing or top roping, velcro and slippers are very nice (if you can get the perfect fit), becuase of the on off convenience. For trad climbing and multi-pitch routes you will probably want a lace up.

I found my 5.10 X-Ray's to be an extremely comfortable Velcro shoe. Very easy on and off and fit like a glove. Now I have a pair of slippers, not as easy to slide into but they fit great.

hmmm. my slippers stretched, my laces take a while to do up, being laces and all. i've never had velcro... but i've also never heard of it coming undone midclimb. i'll keep that in mind. laces are the most secure fit, and if the shoe stretches that way, you can tighten more. just some of the pros/cons.

Although I enjoy the fine-tuning I can get with my lace-up shoes, I also really like my Anasazi Velcros for, among other reasons, the on-off ease and the balance they strike between the control styles of lace-ups and slippers. (does that make sense?) Try on all the styles, but don't be surprised if you fall in love with a nice pair of velcros

i love my anasazi velcro... They're awesome.. But, laces are good too.. Cept velcro is easier to put on, i mean faster.. No tying knots..

I've had all three. I must say I prefer velcro but then again I'm lazy. Easy on easy off and I never had problem with my Zens loosening up on me while climbing. Although if your going for the whole tight factor I find I can tweak my lace up a bit tighter then my velcros. Although I had that problem with the velcro 5.10's I've tried. Even though i'm a beginner and don't have much experience i have velcro shoes and i can say that i'm absolutely glad with my shopping! I've never tried laces but i guess they're much boring u know tying them up and so but to be honest i've heard great things about them too. As someone said before, u'd better try them on before making up your mind! Just my little advise! Laura

all three. laces, i think, if you're a begginer, or somebody who requires a very tight fit (tight even for climbing). velcro for boulders, sport, anything gym. now, here's some overlap: no laces (slippers) for gym, sport, or trad...i wouldn't use a lace up shoe for trad, because one climb can send your laces bye bye, it's happened to me, and i had to anchor off and swap shoes.

well, depends on the type of climbing u are into.. if u needa take off your shoes every now and then, then go for velcro or slippers. But lace up will be the most secure

My first shoes were Boreal Bambas which did up with velcro. Bambas wern't around when time came to replace them so I went on the hunt for another brand of velcros. Laces wern't even in the running. Anyway, I finished up with a pair of lace ups and haven't regretted it for a minute. It does depend on what you do in your shoes but keep an open mind. The issue of laces Vs. Velcro is too minor to be an absolute decider.
