I don't know much about Red River Gorge. Why? I've never been there. What type of rock is it? What is the average length route? (i.e. toprope, 2 pitch, wall) Are there a lot of 5.4-5.9 routes, or is it all tough stuff. My favorite is 5.6 and 5.7. Any 2-4 pitch 5.4-5.6 stuff? What areas do you recommend? Thanks in advance for anyone that helps! Edited to link to routes dbase. -Jules [ This Message was edited by: juliana on 2002-07-14 13:14 ]

Thanks again tradpuppy. I was just hoping someone else with a "secret" area would respond. I guess i'll follow your lead on this one as no one, besides you, seems to know anything about Red. Thanks again. You've been a big help. Steve

Hey WT, can't offer much in the way of "secret" areas, but the Red is not the place to go if you are looking for routes at the bottom end of the grade. In the way of sport routes, I can think of one 5.6, three 5.8's and maybe two 5.7's. The problem lies not so much in the shortage of these routes, but the fact that they are spread out all over the Gorge. Trad climbing doesn't exist in my world, so your best bet would be to follow Tradpuppy's advice and log on to climbkentucky.com. They would definitely be able to help you there. M@

tradpuppy mentioned there is actually quite a bit of lower end stuff. Besides, it doesn't matter to me if they are spread out. I'm not an all day climber. I don't have the endurance to hang from my arms all day. A couple of hours and a couple of routes a day is good enough for me. Thanks for the info. I will be going to the website and asking as the time gets closer. Steve

You really ought to try trad. It is the pure form of climbing (the fact of placing protection, not the way it is done today so much, but the concept is the same) and a lot of fun to boot! I don't mind sport, I just don't get too into it. I'll pass up a bolt all day if there is availability for placing my own gear. Besides, my favorite medium is alpine climbing and trad is necessary that and the fact that I won't by quickdraws! Climb safe and have fun and thanks again, Steve
