I will be there in Oct, not sure a single 11mm 60m rope works better than double 8mm 60m ropes. As I'm travelling from UK, I want to keep my baggage as light as pos.
Also, is it easy to travel around in the valley without a car? I understand the shuttle bus only covers a small part.

you'll be better off with the twin 8's. because 90% of the rappells require 2 60m's. alot of the longer routes have rap routes also. getting around the valley with out a car is no problem. you should make friends if your there for longer than 2 weeks.

Bring a bike and some sack. The bike for commuting, and the sack for the leading.

The free bus will take you anywhere you need to go in the valley, and for a small fee you can take a bus out of the valley to mariposa or merced. Also, you can take a bus out of the valley to Tuolomne or even all the way to Mammoth.

We're going to be in the valley for 3 weeks in early October. Home is Yorkshire at the moment and I know what you mean about weight as one aid rack + another trad rack + camping gear is maxing out the luggage allowance for four of us :? We were planning on taking a mix of singles & halves.
If you're going out and planning to meet a partner in Camp 4, you could bring one half rope or compromise on a restricted rack to supplement anyone you team up with?

Thanks for all the messages so far. I'm definetly keen to climb multi-pitch routes. Been thumbing through the Supertopo YV Free Climbs guide. Very excited about East Buttress and many others.
I will definetly take a 60m half rope 8.5mm, in the hope whoever I managed to climb with will have a good rope too!!
I have to buy most of the cams I need out there, I understand they are a lot cheaper than in UK. Would they still be cheap in the V, as I'm not planning to stop off on route?
