So, after a few long seasons and a few too many ice axe wounds it is time to retire my shell. In shopping for a new one I have come across four I fancy. Price is not an issue when it comes to my jackets. they are just as much a life saving device to me as my rope! I was hoping to get some feedback from some people who have used these four. and the winners are: Mountain Hardwear aiguilla parka (440g), Marmut skylight (510g), Arc'teryx alpha LT (460g), and the Mammut quaser XCR (could not find weight). I don't expect a lot of people to have used all four so anyone who has used just one feel free to chime in about likes or dislikes.

if you live in a dry climate (CO, WY, Alberta, etc) you should consider a softshell. i've been wearing an Arcteryx Gamma MX hoody that i pro-formed 3 years ago for everything. it is the best piece of clothing i've ever worn, bar none. except for days when it's just dumping wet snow (as wet as it gets here in CO), the jacket is absolutely perfect.
just my 2 cents, but i think the era of the hardshell has been over for a while, unless you live in wetter climates, and even then only if it's actually precipitating.

I've got a manticore and it served me well all last season, just make sure you keep it clean, and keep up the DWR, otherwise you will start to get a little damp through it.
