How long is a single pitch on a multipitch climb or on a sport route. I was just woundering how many feet on average.

Anywhere from 50 feet of corner turning, brush crawling, manzanita whacking, to 190 feet of the most beautiful lazer-cut laybacking corner you have ever seen in your entire life.

As the man said, but it might not even be 50 ft. But it's not really much of a pitch if it's less than 70 or so. It feels a bit like you're playing with rope, not climbing, if it's too much shorter than that.

I would say that generally a pitch is around 85-90' or so. Some are longer some are shorter, just use the topo to figure it out and you'll be fine.

generally a pitch won't be over 200 feet, or a 60 meter rope.

Unless you find yourself with a rope longer than 60 meters (anybody?), you're going to hate yourself by the end of a 60 meter pitch. Lots of things take up rope--tie-in knots, using the rope in an anchor, belayers using the rope as a leash, zig-zagging pro, and a wandering route will all eat away at the nominal length of your rope. I often find that I can rap a multi-pitch route in almost half of rope-lenths that got me up.

The shortest pitch I know is the first of Chasing the Wind at Beauty Mtn. at the New. It's about 20' long. The first pitch of Disneyland at the Gunks is another shorty. Or is it Birdland? Anyway, it's one of the Lands.

True for alot of Sport routes....however, most Trad lines that I have ever been up fall somewhere between 120 and 150ft.

Actually, if you use a 60 m rope you'll use some lenght with the knots and it's not safe to lead till the rope is tight: you need 5 to 10 m for the dynamic belay. (Suppose the leader falls just before clipping the next belay anchor...)
So, IMO a pitch shouldn't be longer than 50 m ( and the topo should mention that you need a 60 m rope !)

Granted leading until the rope is tight is bad, but you rarely need a dynamic belay with that much rope out because the fall factor is usually low.

Also look at simul climbing, didn't Hans do Half Dome in two 1,000 foot pitches? I would consider 1,000 feet to be a long pitch.

There are a few of those down there. East meets west has a 25' first pitch with the majority being a traverse. I think the direct variation is even shorter!

Jeff Lowe would tie his two 300 ft ropes together on alpine routes. There are stories of him and Dave Breashears swapping 600 ft leads!

a pitch ends when you run out of rope or find a beautiful place from which to belay.

Yup. And Maria Direct is about the same.

Anyway, in general, I'd say yup - trad is typically 80-150 feet, sport is typically 60-90 feet.

No, this is what you need when you climb a trad route with quite a few (and bad) placements. Try holding a fall on that on a Gri-Gri and you might kill that poor bastard which had the bad idea to lead on your belay.

the only thing you can say with any certainty is that a pitch will almost never be longer than 60m. I have never come across one anyway.

other than that I have seen 25' bolted sport routes and 190' face climbs and long ass cracks.

if going say, from the end of one verticle and you need to traverse horizontally to the beginning of another verticle you'll do a short pitch to stop rope drag.

As this is the newbie forum let me toss something else to confuse the issue. The best answer to how long is a pitch is to get out there and climb some stuff and take some notes. The pitches are about the lengths that are listed. You can also get a good feeling of the character of the rock before you climb. If I look at two climbs one that the topo says is 250'/2 pitches I know that it is quite differant from a 250'/4 pitch. So just climb a bit and look at the topo's to better interpret the beta.

yeah, if it wasn't a beginners forum i would have flamed you. There is no answer to your question. other than the pitch is exactly as long as it is.
