I love to play, but never remember to bring a board.

A few times, though, we didn't let that stop us. One camping trip, we drew a board on the picnic table with a rock, and used rocks for one side and sticks for the other, small ones for pawns, wide stumpy ones for rooks, etc. It's quite fun just finding the pieces, and surprisingly easy to remember which is which.

Another time we were waiting out some rain in a car and just drew pieces on bits of paper. Again, it worked amazingly well and we played several more games with that set, over the rest of the trip.

LMFAO! That should be my mantra for life. Thanks for the big smiles.
My husband plays chess a lot and is quite good (so all his friends yell) and he doesn't incorporate that into his climbing. I've talked to him about loving the "puzzle" aspect of climbing and he didn't get it. Of course, he doesn't actually like climbing, but he likes to get to see me once in awhile so he does it. Maybe I should mention the chess thing and he'd enjoy it a bit more...

Glad I made someone smile, it's been one of those days. I've met climbers from all walks, income levels, etc. but a pretty common thread seems to be folks who have obsessive tendencies, myself included. As long as you channel it, it's all good. If you can get your husband to go climbing at all you're one up on me, but my wife doesn't restrict me from doing it, she knows that I "need" to.

I play chess, cards, and billiards pretty fanatically. I go to school where winters are really cold, and I'm not into ice climbing (nor there is there a big ice climbing scene in Boone... and if there is, I'm not aware of it), so it's nice to pass the time. I agree that they all kind of hold the "think about your next ____ moves in advance" sort of concept, but if that transfers between them, I haven't noticed. I don't play chess while camping, though, because it is too hard to play while drunk. Stupid card games, however, reign supreme while camping. If you can find really cheap card that aren't plastic, they make great back up toilet paper, too.

Not that long ago, I read a report that actually demonstrated that games of chess did increase a climber's mental ability: the demands of focus, concentration, planning, and the development of foresight and consequences were all cited as improved from chess. Conversely, a chess player's ability was seen to be increased if that chess player was a climber. Wish I could find that study... if I can locate the link, I'll post it up.

Chess and climbing are exactly the same game; One mistake could lead to death.

The real question would be, does sport climbing help your chess and vice versa?

My brother plays chess like a heroin addict so there is park in Paris France and its known for people to drop by and play chess. One day my brother goes after some dude who his ranking was #163rd from top best players.

He asked the dude to play with him and the guy refuses but finally dude gave up and told my brother to set the chess. Dude sits facing his back to the chessboard and tells my brother to play for him without him looking at the chessboard.

My brother lost within few moves and he never returned to that park again.

Similar story - my girlfriend's dad is hardcore into chess. He won a state championship (or something along those lines... don't know if it was officail, but it was some sort of tournament). Anyway, I'm not chump myself, but I played him once. The very first game, he played by blindfolded and won in four moves. The three games since, though, have lasted for hours.

you got to use the clock, it is more interesting when time is clicking.

Not so long ago, standard time controls were 40 moves in two hours, with an adjournment at 40.

Word. There's nothing like that relentless *tickticktickticktick* to put the pressure on.

I just played two games at lunch yesterday. I'm working on my Sicilian.

Anyone read "The Queen's Gamibt," by Walter Tevis? A very engaging piece of fiction about an 8 year old chess prodigy.

Tevis also wrote "The Hustler", "The Color of Money", and "The Man Who Fell to Earth."

I've always thought climbing would be more interesting gladiator style, like they did in the first Masters of Stone video. Knowing someone is coming after you to grab for your ankles would be a good motivator to think a couple moves ahead!

I play chess every once in a while. Not enough though,, my 4 year old brother consistantly beats me. It's terrible. (Even when I steal his pieces when he's in the bathroom) I can still kick his ass at Halo 2 though- if thats something I can brag about.

I have often thought climbing is like pool (billiards) for the very same reason. If you don't think 3 moves ahead, you very quickly find yourself in situations that are exceedingly difficult to extricate yourself from.

Hell yeah. I think the very same way.

I played chess some when I was young, but never kept up with it. I picked up GO a few years ago and really like it. Much more portable, too, if you want to take it climbing with you.

I like chess, last time I played I won over 5 non-climbers. Could be interesting to play with somebody that climbs. Haven't play for like 4 years now.
