Hi, I am a Recreational Therapist at a children's rehabilitation hospital in NJ (and a climber). I'm looking to start an out-patient indoor climbing program for children with various disabilities from ADHD, Autism, Cerebral Palsy, Brain injuries, downs syndrome, etc. Presently, I'm looking for any articles or research on the benefits of rock climbing i.e. following directions; learning new skills; increased strength, balance, coordination, problem solving skills; practicing social skills, etc. If anyone has any articles they have read or have come across any research about individuals with or without disabilities, young or old, that speaks of the benefits of climbing, can you please post the name of the article, journal/magazine, issue, etc. If anyone has additional ideas of where to look, that would be great too. I'm trying to be as exhaustive as possible, and traditional periodicals have very few articles. Thank you very much for any help anyone can give me. Also, you can email me at x2drich2000@yahoo.com. Thanks again! Jamie

Hi - I have done a little work with climbers who are deaf and climbers who travel by wheel chair. A local camp - Camp Horizon has had an adaptive program that must be at least ten years old. http://www.easterseals.ab.ca/camp/ Let me know if I can help. B

Glad to see that others have similar ideas to mine. I am a sports med. specialist., but I work in pediatric cancer therapy. I work at the Texas Cancer Research Cntr., here in San Antonio. We have been trying out many different forms of rehab with the kids, but have not gone into any kind of climbing. I have set up a small board/wall at the hospital, just to get some of the stronger kids mentally fit. Our programs does go into alternative diet, exercise, and metal rehab, but not really addressing the questions that you have asked. I would like to talk with you more on the subject if you like though. We are dealing with a little bit different situation with the kids, but might be able to share some knowledge. I might just be able to answer some questions, with situations we have had, or vise versa. Anything for the kids man. Email me. Rik Aguilera
