I think that few other sports are enveloped with as much mystery and misunderstanding as climbing. It is complicated spoort with lots of catagies and a very colorful history. Maybe I haven't seen it, but I don't think swimming has the equivilent of Cliff Hanger and Vertical Limit to educate the masses (I don't think Water World counts). Getting asked "Why you have so many key chains?" isn't being elitist, thats just funny. I have a feeling that your girlfriend's thread would be pretty boring.

my girlfriend could certainly fill an entire thread by herself with the things that I DON'T know about swimming, and the dumb questions I've asked her.

Has your girlfriend ever been asked "So what, do you do that in water?"

First time climbing a friend of mine asked me what my naglene bottle was for...(It was full of water at the time) Then told be that we should wear the chalk bags in front instead of behind... I then explained that we was acting like those people who ski in jeans and starter jackets :D

I'd certainly agree. But then, I don't think this is the most interesting thread either. But if you do like pointing out how funny it is that people don't know things about climbing, then more power to you. In fact, might I suggest that you scroll to the bottom of this page? There's links to 5 more threads exactly like this one there!

Steve

P.S. Although I will admit, the key chain thing IS pretty funny.

Isn't this what a forum is for? Why abuse someone who just wants to share a little humor? I don't think the intent is to look down on newbees. We all asked stupid questions when we first began. In skydiving we get lots of dumb questions too ,they can be funny, whats the harm in sharing a laugh?

My favorite question is.... well I've never been asked any of those questions. I really suspect that they are just "urban legend"-type cliches that climbers fantasize about being asked so that they think other people are stupid. Its great having some jargon-filled esoteric language to exclude other people.
To answer about elitists in other sports, take soccer for example: The elitist in that sport beat the crap outta fans from for the other team. That, I think, is what we need more of in this sport-random senseless violence. Next time I come accross a sharma fan I wont ridicule them, I will just pulverize them.

Not really a question, but a funny 'encouraging' comment;

My buddy was figuring out the middle sequence to a boulder problem. From the stand start he was able to top out, but the problem was an obvious sit start. So, after he tops out, the newbie chimes in with, "NICE ASCENT!"

We were all there at one time.

That is a good question. Why abuse someone who just wants to share a little humor? After all, he probably just didn't know that this thread has been done many, many times over. And I agree, the internet isn't to look down on newbies.

But then, the whole point of the thread is to abuse people who just didn't know, and who are newbies, even if they don't know they're being abused. Don't believe me? Check out parts of the original post:

In reply to:
I have heard some really dumb questions about climbing...all from inexperienced climbers... that really make me laugh.

obviously only hit the plastic, and had no idea about sport or trad climbing.

So there you go... "Look at how funny it is that this person didn't know something, they must not know ANYTHING".

Like I said, if that's your bag, then more power to you, there's plenty of other threads like this to check out.

And that's a great point about soccer fans... Dave Graham all the way! I'll take any of you Sharma loving punters!

Steve

P.S. This one time, at golds gym, I mentioned that I was a climber, and this guy was like "Have you ever fallen?" and I was like "hah hah, he's so dumb, he doesn't know that I don't flash everything".

You'll forgive me if the first two just sound like a way to engage in conversation. When trying to do so, one successful tactic is to find out something the other person is knowledgeable about and ask questions. Sometimes these aren't well-formed.

Go climb for free at the Gunks, n00b. God, what a retarded ass!

Did that feel good? They are the exception rather than the rule, but outside areas with fees are a reality. I could list a few more if you like. Beginners in almost every pursuit are going to try to match old information against new systems. It's part of how we try to adjust to new environments and tasks. This guy has always paid for climbing, and assumed he would pay outdoors, as well. If you'd never been, how would you know? Maybe he's a skier, and used to paying for slope access.

Some of these examples are humorous (such as the keychain story), but many just show the elitist attitude of some climbers. Usually, it seems to be those climbers without a whole lot of time under their belts, still reveling in how cool they are.

The dumbest one I have heard is "what are the dumbest questions you have heard about climbing?" They come in threads about every three months and have 8 pages of the same questions.

How about some dumb answers?
If only I could rate posts today, trophy for truth

Just look at the bottom of this page for topics of the past ...

How about a thread on dumb questions that the experienced ask?

I agree with you here, but I have to admit that I definitely have had my share of laughs. Part of the fun is knowing that at one time I wondered, "how the hell do they get that rope up there?"

When I was starting out (August - September) I climbed in the gym for a month or two before going outside. My first outdoor expirence was bouldering. The only other bouldering I did was in a gym(with a taped bouldering problem). I asked a friend at the gym if there were set holds I could used outside, or if anything(with a few exceptions) was on.

there I asked a dumb question about climbing

Not so much a stupid questin as a stupid comment from a climber @ City of Rocks

This happened a few years back… It was the last day of a climbing road trip and there one crack climb I was saving for the onsite. We arrived at the climb and there was a group top roping it… No problem, so we did a few other climbs near by and came back a couple hours later.

Well… the group was still there but eating lunch near the base. I approached the group (6 people) and told them that it was my last day at the City, I really wanted to get on the climb, and if they would mind if I pulled their rope so that I could lead it. Their response was “no, do not touch our rope; there is still a couple of us who haven’t climbed it.”

I then politely said that we would put their rope back up after we were finished.

Then… one on the ‘ladies’ in the group said “haven’t you ever heard of first come first serve? In school, we learn that one in grade two”

I apologised and said that I was Canadian and in grade 2, we learned to share!

So, I pulled their rope, did the climb, and drove home with a huge grin and great story to tell.

One time a n00b asked:

Is it cheating if I rest in the middle of the climb ?
