I will be hanging out there as well. Anywhere to find all the rc.commers in particular?

all over the damn place, freaking each other out, calling each other by name to see who recognizes who first?

Most likely the beer tent.

Anyone need a ride from DC out to the NRG on Friday 19th evening? I would love to share gas expenses. I have a honda hatchback which doesn't drink too much so it would be cheap to split it up.

I'll be working at the no-booze-bar from 8-10 saturday and I'll bring a black sharpie marker, so stop by and have me write "rc.com" on your forehead, and then you can run around all night trying to find the rest of us!

Peace.

Jay's idea is even better, I would actually do something like that for part of the night, lol. Thats kind of sad though at the same time somehow. But I still say we should do it.

Oh yeah, and then instead of actually speaking to each other we'll text message back and forth, that way we won't feel like we miss our pathetic computers as much!

Peace.

OK, more palatable idea: At the Seneca Cinco de Mayo Bash last Saturday, I wrote my username on my beer cup. Worked like a charm. I met microbarn, kubi, charley, chronicle and a few more whose names I can't remember right now. I was so drunk.

It looked like the dancers were taking good care of you.

You don't remember that.
Ask Wendy. I'm sure she does.
Not remembering sucks, eh.

Good meeting you and the name on the cup is a good idea. so have some sharpies around thecups and the beer.

Yeah, too bad they couldn't join us for the party. They were busy rescuing a kitten that wandered out onto the North summit. Real stand-up gals, those j_ung Dancers. :D

good times were indeed had by all....except all those little kids in the front row who didn't win anything. The expressions on their faces broke my heart, each time.

I plan on being there. If anyone did the bouldering comp last year, i have some questions for you. I plan on trying it and it would be my first comp. So i was wondering about some of the details on how they work it

You go to the courthouse lawn, sign up for a comp/pay entry fee, get on a shuttle to hawks nest/cotton hill, or wherever you plan on bouldering for the day, write down your problems on the score sheet, then turn it in at the end of the day. Then you get first dibs on dinner! Can't beat it.

What are the skill levels: Beginner V? to V? Intermediate: V? to V? and pro?. Somone else informed me that the beginner would compete on V1 to V3 problems. Is this true? Also can only climbers that are competing use the bus or can your friends that want to spot you or watch enjoy the ride too?
Take Care

And another question that i just thought of is: do they give you a pre set list of problems to try and are they marked in some way when you get to the site? I have the NRG bouldering guide but have only climbed at the dam, (hawks nest i think). So i am hoping that they will be marked and easy to find if there are pre-set problems. Thanks again

Andrew and others:

Here's all I know: http://www.waterstoneoutdoors.com/spec.aspx?pid=291

The idea behind the shuttle is to try to cut way down on traffic/cluster in the parking areas for the boulder comp. Please ask your friends/spotters/whoever to ride the shuttle rather than driving! Also, be sure to encourage others to do the same thing.

Parking, both at Burnwood and at the boulders, is a big concern this year, everyone needs to do their best to be patient and cooperative in this aspect in order to preserve this event's good rep with the land managers. Things are more sensitive than we realize and we need to really step up to the challenge of keeping this thing sustainable.

There are tons of little things we can do during this event to make things better for ourselves and other climbers at the New:

-Microtrash: We all know, don't litter, don't throw trash on the ground, but many of us accidentally drop small pieces of tape, cig butts, and other things like that on the ground and may not notice, or may not care enough to pick up something so insignificant. If you see ANY trash, pick it up!! We pride ourselves on leaving Burnwood better than it was when we got there, do your part to eliminate ALL litter. Park officials notice when the place is spotless, and they also notice microtrash at the crags. Make it your mission to pick up EVERYTHING that you see both at Burnwood and at the crags.

-Chalk: Seems like not a big deal to climbers, it's a common sight. Chalked up holds all over popular sport lines don't seem to bother many climbers. Believe me, land managers and other land users both notice this more than you think. Bring your bouldering brush, or an old, stiff bristled brush and clean off a few of the most obnoxious holds on whatever problem or route you happen to be on. It's not a big deal, and doesn't take long, while you're lowering, or (gulp) hanging, pull your brush out of your pocket and brush off those caked up holds. Remember, nylon bristles, not wire.

-Erosion: This is a HUGE problem around the crags and boulders at the New, and it is also the easiest thing to do your part in preventing. Things like staying on trails and avoiding trampling vegitation with your crashpads are obvious, but here's the kicker... DON'T SPREAD OUT! When climbers settle under a few routes, they are notorious for covering a large area with packs, gear, dogs, children, and tons of other things they bring along for the day at the crags. Keeping your things tidy and close to the rock and you will help prevent spreading erosion from the base of the crag. Fences are up in some places, in others, use common sense. Keep your things close by, and try hard not to spread out, especially when you're climbing with a large group.

With this many climbers converging on the New, if everyone does a little, we can accomplish a lot.

Hey, anybody wanna volunteer to help out at the NRR? Check the original post or email Wendy Young, volunteer coordinator, directly: wendy.young (at) charter.net.

Volunteer shifts usually only last a few hours at most, and are actually pretty fun, like bar tending, passing out cookies, selling raffle tickets, etc.

I wanna help! I emailed Wendy Friday, but I haven't heard back. Hopefully if I don't hear from her I can just find a place to pitch in when I get down there.

Charley, it's not wet at all! The weather reports for here are almost always bad and it's almost always better than they say it'll be. Nobody was here last weekend, 'cause the weather report was shite. Saturday ended up being one of the best clibing days this spring!

The current weather report for the 'Vous is actually not so bad -- I expect good weather!

To you folks who have not heard back yet for volunteering, Wendy tells me she just sent out some emails last night, but if you didn't get one, just pop in when you get here. We're still looking for a few "floaters," who can slip silently from job to job like the wind. There will be jobs to go 'round!

Hell, I'm sitting here baking cookies as we speak. :)
