We'll be there J-ung!!! Can't wait! Wes- Craig and I will definitely be making some trips to the good ole NRG this spring. The way I feel about it is this - I LOVE the Red, totally, but the New will always be home. It's where I learned to rock climb! So anytime you wanna go, we'll totally go too and crank some some NRG sandstone with ya!

Hell yes, this will be the best thing since... well this will be the best thing ever! (Yeah, even better than sliced bread, and even better than last year!) You better believe I'll be there! Mark P.S. I'll be there from Friday morning until the next Saturday, one full week of NRG lovin' before I head down to Brevard for a dirtbag summer filled with teaching young'uns how to climb and long evenings of aid solo action on the north side of Looking Glass.

In reply to: In reply to: For those that have never been to Roger's, could someone please post driving directions from 19. Thanks! -DD- Turn right into Fayetteville on 16. Go through downtown. Swerve left at Sherrie's Beer Store onto Gateway Road. Pass a ridge, two hollers and one more shout, now, turn left when you see a small sign for Kaymoor No. 1. Go until you see a bunch of hippies with wierd muscley forearms and cool sunglasses. Pull up and offer them beer. They will then do any disgusting act you prefer. Or if you want to get rid of them scream: "Drop your backpacks, I'm a DEA agent!". They'll avoid you like an ice climber avoids the library. UB Oh. Right you are. Well, the Rocky Top Retreat will be a bit quieter if you care about such things.

Hey folks, here's a link to the latest NRAC newsletter. Lots of good Rendezvous info there. Highlights: Carpool! We more than maxed out the Burnwood parking last year, so this year we're locking the gates once the lot fills up. We don't necessarily wanna, but we have to give a little to the NPS to get a little. Donate! We don't charge an entrance fee to the NRR, but the biggest reason we have it is to reaise money for anchor and old bolt replacement! This is one of the few charities that you'll ever donate to and follow up by using what you helped support the very next day. Please dig deep! Silent Auction! Raffles! Donations! OK, you get the point... More clinics! Brittany Griffith, Craig Luebben, Timmy O'Neill and more will be lending their time. Live Music! Local blues band, Sockmonkey and RRG rapper, O-dub will rock the hizzo Saturday night. Recycling! We're a little greener every year. Keep an eye out for recycling containers!

I'll be there - whatever one I was at last (#2?) was a blast! And Kachoong, whenabouts are you going to be there? I'm an ex-Queenslander, and it would be cool to meet up with someone from down under again. If you're the same kachoong that hangs around on qurank, then I think we probably have some mutual friends - Lee, Niel, Phil... Will

Yep, I'm the same one and I know them lads! I'll be at NRG with my sweetie probably the week following the Rendezvous, but we're not sure on a definate day yet. We'd like to be in the area for at least a week.

Sweet! I think I'm most likely going to be living/working at the New this summer, so we should definitely be able to meet up. Also, I looked at your profile trying to figure out if we'd ever ran into each other in Australia or if we had mutual friends, and I saw that you're currently in Texas. Texas is where I'm originally from, and most of my family still lives there. We seem to have a lot in common! Will

You guys can team up and climb Arapiles Please. Also Bubba Down Under. I thought there was also a "Bubbas at Arapiles" but maybe that's actually in Australia, not the New. Please advise http://www.wirednut.com/...mages/ana_meadow.jpg

Im looking for a little advice from some of you NRG regulars about the rendezvous. See, here's the deal. Myself and possibly two other people are gonna be trotting around WV during the week before the NRR, and obviously plan on making the New a huge part of our trip. I was just curious how friendly ya'll are to those of us who aren't "locals"? I noticed that most of the people posting in this thread seem to know each other, so I get the idea of a pretty tight knit community which is great. I also noticed on the official site there was mention of not trying to grow the event at all. I was just curious if we'll be welcomed, should we decide to end our awesome roadtrip by hangin out at the NRR for a day or two? I can't speak for my friends but I know I'll be glad to make any contribution you're asking for since I know the climbing we do in the New will be worth it. Thanks for any feedback. Peace. Colby

don't worry at all, everyone is super friendly and welcomes everyone. they don't the event to grow really because there's only so much room at Burnwood for camping and parking, and also the event is free - though they really push for donations - but they can only accomodate so many people for those reasons. don't let that keep you from coming and having a great time - just only bring the friends you really like  hope to see you there

dondiego and kasharp, thank you so much for your input. i kinda figured the NRG folks would be my kind of climbers, and you helped assure me of that. I'll definitely plan to be there, since i'm already gonna be down there, and can't friggin wait to meet some awesome new people, who also happen to be climbers. wicked. i'm so stoked to get outta classes and head down the road this summer. just out of curiousity, are any climbers from the central/harrisburg, PA area planning to attend? I wouldnt mind putting a face with some of you who frequent this site if your gonna be around. peace, colby

Hey Chalker, when are you planning on coming down to the New? I'm planning on being in the Lancaster, PA area working before the Rendezvous, then heading down either tuesday night or wednesday night to help with setup and other various things around Fayetteville. I could be pursuaded to leave earlier. Haha. Like everyone said, WE (meaning everyone coming to the Rendezvous, it belongs to all of us!) are an all inclusive, super friendly bunch and this is one party you don't want to miss! Just be patient and cooperative when parking and do not drink and drive and everything else will take care of itself (oh yeah, throw a few bucks in the NRAC jar to help pay for those bolts you're clipping and the best climber-parkservice relationship you could hope for). I'll see you there! Mark

Mark, If everything goes according to my plan I will be leaving the homestead on Friday the 12th or Saturday the 13th. I havent decided exactly what kind of agenda I will be following during my stay there, but I would be more than happy to link up with you while I'm there, especially since this will be my virgin voyage to the New. I also wouldnt have any problem helping with the rendezvous if the extra couple hands are needed. Just out of curiousity, what are you doing in Lancaster? I only ask because I live "relatively" close and there's decent climbing in the area if you're going to be around for any extended period of time before the week in question. PM me sometime and we'll see what's up. Either way I'm super stoked for the NRR! Peace, Colby

A couple buddies and I from Annapolis will be there. That's a week before our graduation, so we'll be ready to party. I wonder does the climbing ability increase with alcohol intake like the normal invincibility levels when drinking at sporting events?

Hey, anybody wanna volunteer to help out at the NRR? Check the original post or email Wendy Young, volunteer coordinator, directly: wendy.young (at) charter.net. Volunteer shifts usually only last a few hours at most, and are actually pretty fun, like bar tending, passing out cookies, selling raffle tickets, etc.

Volunteering is one thing I can do with a limited budget. Unfortunately, I am not sure if I will be interning somewhere away from the east coast this summer. Hopefully I can help out in some form prior to this weekend. Dan

In reply to: In reply to: A couple buddies and I from Annapolis will be there. That's a week before our graduation, so we'll be ready to party. I wonder does the climbing ability increase with alcohol intake like the normal invincibility levels when drinking at sporting events? We don't climb while we're drinking! Unless your name is Gus.

#4, it's a shame I'll have to miss you this year. but hey, next year's event could be my kid's one year birthday party #2 and #3 were a blast and can only imagine how much better this year's event will be. So many good people in one place for one cause -- The New. I know I'll hear all about it from my buddies (two of them who are trying to convince me that they are capable of delivering the baby at the rendevous) Anyways, I wish everyone a great time and excellent weather See ya next year for #5, Chris

This just in: Patagonia has offered to replace all your old, nasty Patagonia underwear for FREE. If you have old, ratty drawers, capliene shirts, etc., bring 'em and trade 'em in for new stuff. Go Patagonia! :) EDIT: Oops! Not for FREE! It's old undies, plus a ten dollar donation to the WV Rivers Alliance.

Well, now that we find ourselves counting the days until the event, I've decided to make another appearance on this thread. First, I'll be coming down Monday (5/15) morning so, if anyone would be kind enough to recommend some cheap camping in the area, I'd appreciate it. Currently all my plans are based on Steve Cater's third edition guidebook, so the camping I've planned on was Chestnut Creek Campground, but there's no beta about cost in the book. The other idea was Rocky Top Retreat because its super cheap, but seems to be further from where the rendezvous will be taking place. Not a super important decision, but input is still desired and appreciated. Second, I've had some correspondence with a few of you about climbing the week before and during the event. I'm sure I'll have no problem finding some partners during the rendezvous, but prior to that I'm hoping to find someone to climb with. I'm no high-level climber by any means, but I'll be a belay monkey on some of the harder stuff in exchange for the same. Hell, I'll even volunteer to haul your gear if it means I'll get a partner. PM me if you'd like to hit the rock, during the week or even during the event. I'll be volunteering at the no-booze-bar for part of the time so I should be easy to find. Thanks all, see you there. Peace. Colby

Colby- Camping during the Rendezvous is at Burnwood, but before then your best bet would be Rogers ... it's $5 a night, $1 for showers, and you should be able to find a partner there if you need one. I'll be there on the 15th as well, if you want to do some climbing. I've got guide training during the day starting the 16th, but I can climb in the evenings :) get excited!!! :D Katie

Just a little update...I was at Roger's a couple weekends back and he's increased his rate to $6. So if you add the shower then its $7, just a dollar cheaper than Brian's (Chestnut Creek). Don't get me wrong, I'm a Rocky-top loyalist myself...Roger's got tons better atmosphere...but gotta admit Brian does offer better services for what he charges.

Cool, thanks. I appreciate the advice. Katie, is there a way I can get ahold of you once I get down there, because even if you tell me where you'll be I will likely do something stupid like getting lost. So if you want to PM me your number that will work. I was gonna just try to find Mark but I guess he's not coming down til later and I'm guessing you two are friends anyway so I'll get to meet up with him later. Anyway, I'm definitely up for climbing with you when you can because I'm trying to avoid my hometown climbing partner at the moment. Also, if you want to try to get a whole days climbing in let me know and I'll adjust my departure time so I can get there earlier and link up with ya. Thanks. Oh yeah, Wendy Young emailed me and I guess im working the bar from 8-10 saturday night. I'm not sure why I threw that in there. I think I'm just tired. Peace. Colby

Awesome, Colby! Unfortunately I won't make it down until Thursday around noonish. My family is throwing me a graduation party Wednesday night. I'm planning on putting a lot into the Rendezvous, I had such a fun time the past two years and I'm excited about really giving back and showing everyone as good of a time as I've had. So I'm not too sure what my climbing plans will be, but we should definitely get out some! Mark

Good to hear from you again Mark. I'd definitely be up for some climbing during the time that you are at the New so I will make sure to find you. If we can't get to the rock for some reason, I'm sure I'll be seeing plenty of you during the festivities and look forward to meeting you finally. Also, are you originally from the Lancaster area, and is that going to be where you're living during this summer? I only ask because I'm close to the area, as I may have mentioned before, and I'd be just as willing to meet up with you for some good 'ole PA climbing as well. If I don't talk to you before then, I'll see you at the New. Pace. Colby

Folks, my beautiful wife and NRR volunteer coordinator, Wendy, informs me that we need more volunteers. Shifts are short -- in some case as little as an hour. If you work four hours, you get a free MH Duration T! Email Wendy! wendy.young(at)charter.net!

i hope folks will step up and volunteer. maura, kenny and elaina have carried a lot of responsbility for this event over the years. wendy's stepping up to coordinate the volunteers is huge. if you know ahead of time that you are tapping your finances just to get to f'ville, pay camping, buy food....give your time. the karma from time shared will get you rested for the redpoints, or onsights. you'll see a ton of people. take your calendar with you and hook up climbing partners for the next 6 months. people come from all over. even if you decide to go last minute, stop by burnwood or waterstone sports. ask someone if they need help, tell them how much time you have and pitch in.

Update: Patagonia has gerously offered to trade you new capilene underwear for old capilene underwear plus a $10 donation to the WV Rivers Alliance. (Sorry, I was mistaken before, when I said it was totally free.) AND, they are offering up a $100 Patagonia gift certificate for the person with the best capilene-underwear story. There I was, nothing protecting me from the vacuum of space and certain death but my Patagonia drawers... and the hole in the crotch was widening...

Oh yeah, and then instead of actually speaking to each other we'll text message back and forth, that way we won't feel like we miss our pathetic computers as much! Peace. Colby

What are the skill levels: Beginner V? to V? Intermediate: V? to V? and pro?. Somone else informed me that the beginner would compete on V1 to V3 problems. Is this true? Also can only climbers that are competing use the bus or can your friends that want to spot you or watch enjoy the ride too? Take Care Andrew

And another question that i just thought of is: do they give you a pre set list of problems to try and are they marked in some way when you get to the site? I have the NRG bouldering guide but have only climbed at the dam, (hawks nest i think). So i am hoping that they will be marked and easy to find if there are pre-set problems. Thanks again

Andrew and others: Here's all I know: http://www.waterstoneoutdoors.com/spec.aspx?pid=291 The idea behind the shuttle is to try to cut way down on traffic/cluster in the parking areas for the boulder comp. Please ask your friends/spotters/whoever to ride the shuttle rather than driving! Also, be sure to encourage others to do the same thing. Parking, both at Burnwood and at the boulders, is a big concern this year, everyone needs to do their best to be patient and cooperative in this aspect in order to preserve this event's good rep with the land managers. Things are more sensitive than we realize and we need to really step up to the challenge of keeping this thing sustainable. There are tons of little things we can do during this event to make things better for ourselves and other climbers at the New: -Microtrash: We all know, don't litter, don't throw trash on the ground, but many of us accidentally drop small pieces of tape, cig butts, and other things like that on the ground and may not notice, or may not care enough to pick up something so insignificant. If you see ANY trash, pick it up!! We pride ourselves on leaving Burnwood better than it was when we got there, do your part to eliminate ALL litter. Park officials notice when the place is spotless, and they also notice microtrash at the crags. Make it your mission to pick up EVERYTHING that you see both at Burnwood and at the crags. -Chalk: Seems like not a big deal to climbers, it's a common sight. Chalked up holds all over popular sport lines don't seem to bother many climbers. Believe me, land managers and other land users both notice this more than you think. Bring your bouldering brush, or an old, stiff bristled brush and clean off a few of the most obnoxious holds on whatever problem or route you happen to be on. It's not a big deal, and doesn't take long, while you're lowering, or (gulp) hanging, pull your brush out of your pocket and brush off those caked up holds. Remember, nylon bristles, not wire. -Erosion: This is a HUGE problem around the crags and boulders at the New, and it is also the easiest thing to do your part in preventing. Things like staying on trails and avoiding trampling vegitation with your crashpads are obvious, but here's the kicker... DON'T SPREAD OUT! When climbers settle under a few routes, they are notorious for covering a large area with packs, gear, dogs, children, and tons of other things they bring along for the day at the crags. Keeping your things tidy and close to the rock and you will help prevent spreading erosion from the base of the crag. Fences are up in some places, in others, use common sense. Keep your things close by, and try hard not to spread out, especially when you're climbing with a large group. With this many climbers converging on the New, if everyone does a little, we can accomplish a lot.

Charley, it's not wet at all! The weather reports for here are almost always bad and it's almost always better than they say it'll be. Nobody was here last weekend, 'cause the weather report was shite. Saturday ended up being one of the best clibing days this spring! The current weather report for the 'Vous is actually not so bad -- I expect good weather! To you folks who have not heard back yet for volunteering, Wendy tells me she just sent out some emails last night, but if you didn't get one, just pop in when you get here. We're still looking for a few "floaters," who can slip silently from job to job like the wind. There will be jobs to go 'round! Hell, I'm sitting here baking cookies as we speak. :)

In reply to: Charley, it's not wet at all! The weather reports for here are almost always bad and it's almost always better than they say it'll be. Nobody was here last weekend, 'cause the weather report was s---. I just want to clarify. After receiving Wendy's email I'm a "floater" not a "paddler"--I don't want some crazed rc.comer running after me trying to play whack-a-mole with my head screaming "Kill it! Kill it!"

Weather hasn't been great here at the nrg, but the routes are pretty much dry, and I have had a couple of killer days so far. Just hope my skin holds out for the weekend!

:P That's crazy talk! Yesterday and today were great, except for one brief squall. And of course, the storm that just blew through a minute ago... Lots of set up today, and folks are already arriving. We had a little pre-Rendezvous with the volunteers who were here last night and three folks from NY -- the first guests of the 2006 'Vous! Some of the set up got trashed by high winds about an hour ago, but most of it is fine and we'll fix it up right first thing in the morning. We've got a slight chance of rain in the forcast for tomorrow, Saturday looks to be perfect and Sunday, too, until storms blow in sometime late in the afternoon. Come on down! (or up... whatever.) :D

waterstone's website is DOWN!!!!!!! oh the horror! THE HORROR!!!! I think I remember the directions, but it would be super awesome if people knew of a mirrored site with all the same info. Anybody happen to still have a list of the clinics that were taking place on Sunday? Friends wanted to sign up, but they didn't get to see the list. I have: self rescue crack climbing technique warrior's way (sat and sun) There were about 3 others though. Anyone happen to know? I understand the crack climbing clinic and Sunday Warrior's way are filled. I am sure all the info will all be at the hospitality tent too. See you all tonight

Yikes! Looks like Water Stone's server is overloaded. The Rendezvous is on the Summersville side of the New River. If you're coming from the south, cross the bridge and then make the first left. If you're coming from the north, go almost all the way to the river and then make the last possible right. Look for Canyon Rim Visitor Center signs and then turn the opposite direction off route 19. Everything else, you can learn when you get here! I just baked a cake. That's right, bitches. I. Baked. A cake. And now I have to run out to Rendezvous-land and wrap up some set up things. I already met crimpergirl, BTW. We had a raucus dinner last night at P&P, foodfighting with Mal Daly, Arno Ilgner, Doug Houten and Kenny Parker. Much pizza was eaten. There may have been a beer or two involved as well. IT'S ON.

email elaina_arenz@msn.com to sign up for the clinic. Also stop by the hospitality tent when you get there. I have not been to the NRR before, but it seems as though the campground will not be closed. If it is closed....then there will be plenty of people there to give you directions to another place. I would suggest not worrying about it until you arrive. Space will be found somewhere.

Nobody did a play-by-play from their cellphones? Lame. Rendezvous kicked ass, thanks a lot Jay and others for organizing it. Who all was at the self-rescue workshop this morning? I know there had to be a lot of us rc.commers there 'cause when Craig mentioned people arguing about the cordolette on teh intarweb about 10 of us chimed in with our opinions on that massive thread.

Props to the NRAC crew. Maura, Kenny and Elaina actually looked like they were having a little fun, and down time thanks to the quality folks who stepped up to help make the NRR bigger and better this year: Wendy and Jay, Heather, Ryan, and scads of people whose name I didn't learn. The weather said it all...blue skies, moderate temps and sun!

Never, and I mean never, have I partied with so many RC.com people in one weekend. Thank you all so much for coming out and representing this site as the group of caring individuals it is! wes_allen (first!), neuroshock, kubi, microbarn, climbinganne, pornstarr, charley, betaben, dontmaytagme, chalker7, crimpergirl, arnoilgner, maldaly, boo, cccman (phlsphr, did we meet?) and many more showed up to lend their support to the biggest ongoing re-anchoring effort east of the Rockies. And that doesn't even count the locals and semilocals, like kasharp, mr186, skobotin, wurst, mulcahy, nrgroscoe and more. For the second year in a row, we lucked out with perfect temps and blue skies! I even managed to get out and climb a bit Friday and Saturday. Friday I only had a couple hours so I ran to the Bridge and bummed rides on topropes. Thanks to several folks who let me tie in, I managed to lay down six routes fast. Saturday I climbed with cccman and boo at Fern Point, sent a long-time hit-list denizen of mine and got on two new (for me) routes, one of which I never would have touched had boo not insisted! I don't yet have a complete tally of dollars raised, but you can bet your ass it was another huge success in NRAC's ever-growing list of them. Late Saturday night, I grabbed two donation boxes and counted out almost $500. Just from two boxes! :D Big, big thanks also to the event sponsors who made this unbelievable shindig financially possible, the clinic leaders who brought it big time and the volunteers who worked their asses off. (How are you guys gonna wear harnesses without asses?) Big ups to Odub who came out and spat rhymes, once with SEC board member Lee Means! Lee, who knew you could throw down like that?! Jeez, man. Not to be outdone, Fayetteville's own Sockmonkey shook the pavillion, too. Remember: next year, due to changes in the park's Management Plan, we will not be able to collect any money at Burnwood. Ssssooooo... NRR 2007 will be by entry fee only. I assure you, though, we won't ream anybody. The entry fee will be as low as possible and will still seem like a paltry sum to cough up for such a rocking good time! I wanted to post some photos in here, but I was so damn swamped the whole time, I didn't take a single picture. Hopefully some of you other cats will pick up my slack.

Great times at a very well done event. J_ung and the rest deserve a big round of thanks, no doubt. Climbed five days in a row, sent some cool routes, fell of the last moves of some others, and had a very fun time overall. Must get back to the NRG more this year! I have some, ok, a few hundred, photos. Will try to get them sorted and posted over the next couple days. And, if you all are looking for something to do this weekend, we are having a nice event at the red as well!

I am soooooo tired. Great weekend. J_ung, I have no idea whether we met. I met so many people--even crimpergirl--goddess of rock--she of the bloodyknee immortalized by wes's pic. All I know is that the combination of red bull + vodka + band featuring some old guys that ROCKED the house (unlike lame closing act) = dancing phlsphr (one who is normally dance impared). If there are any pics of THAT they may need to be destroyed!

Brian took a ton of good pics. Many of them cover the group events such as dinner, sumo, and breakfast. Check out his pics here: http://www.brianherman.com/ under the 'Fun' column click 'NRG Rendezvous 4' Then you can browse the pics. Clicking on the thumbnails for the bigger versions.

Folks, the numbers are starting to roll in. And while I don't have an exact dollar amount, I have it on very good authority that the 4th New River Rendezvous netted (net, not gross) in excess of $10,000. I just want to say, on behalf of the New River Alliance of Climbers, THANK YOU, to everybody who made this event what it was. The thought of the bolts/anchors we can replace and other good we can do with this money is staggering, and all of us are so overwhelmed by the outpouring of support and the extent to which all of you want to be part of this enormous hardware replacement effort. I'll have a complete list of sponsors I want to shout out to soon, but I wanted to get the word on this out to you all now, since I know everybody's been wondering. 10 large, yo. WOW! :D
