Do you use the ticklist?

How many here use the ticklist provided by RC.com?

I don't really get the point of having a ticklist on this forum. Why is it there? Is it so others can see what you've done? Is it for others to ask you about routes you've done? Is the tick list useful?

I bring this up because someone stated, in another post, that my good friend Organic has only climbed two 12's and both routes were in Jackson Falls and the grades there are soft. Is the ticklist there for chest puffing? Is it there so that we can use it against other RC.com-mers?

Help.

I think it's a good feature, especially for longer climbs, or routes that are difficult to find

If it makes you happy, go ahead and use it as a means of spraying. better yet, use it to get into a pissing contest with fellow climbers. You could also tick a bunch of routes you haven't done, but know that you "could" climb them if you tried.

In the end, the only reason anyone would care to look at your tick list is if they wanted some beta on a particular climb.

I use it to judge suitability of potential climbing partners. Its nice to climb with someone who fits your style or has done some of the same routes.

Its also kinda nice to see your progress as you add more routes to it.

that's a good point.

As well, when used consistently, it will add to the route database.

I like the RD and the ticklist feature, its cool to go back through some of the routes youve done and maybe forgotten. Its also gives a sample of what type of climbs someone does, and what kind of climber they are.

The one thing I hate about it is that a user's routes seem to be listed in a totally random order. Orgonization by grade would be really handy, or maybe orgonization by area and then grade (thats a tip, rc.com staff).

Overall I think its definatly worth having.

I love the tick list option! It helps me remember climbs that I want to get to, and it feels good when I take them off my ticklist and add them to my ascent list.

I also like adding routes to the database. That way I can let other climbers know about my experience at the area.

It helps me set cllimbing goals for myself. I could care less who looks at my lists, never mind if they are going to be lame enough to judge me! As a matter of fact, I never thought anyone would do that.

I never use it. The only times that i have ever listed a rt as climbed I did it to add to the descripion of the rt. I hate it when people tick a rt but don't tell you anything about the Rt. I click on the show all ascents to try to find out how good the gear is etc for a given rt. usualy its just a date of when they climbed it. Usless info to me. I keep a real climbing journal for all my acents. No reason to list it on the web.

I have to agree, I use the tick list all the time. Sometimes to asses the credibilty of a poster, I mean, if your posting like you know what your talking about, but then only have 8's on your tick list, I don't think I am going to take your advice as readily as contradicting advice from someone with an extensive tick list.

I know it could be faked or the person with low grades could just not be keeping up with it, but it works for me.

I also like taking routes off the tick list and onto asscents.

As I understand it, the ticklist is what you want to do, not what you have done.

Regardless, the only reason I can see for posting something you want to do is if you were looking for like minded folks to climb with.

I have no idea why you would post what you have climbed. Seems kinda lame.

There are two lists: the ascents list and the tick list. The ascents list is a list of routes you've climbed. The tick list is a list of routes you want to climb. I use both, for record keeping and goal setting, respectively.

Jay, i have a hard cover climbing journal that has all my acents as well as my hopes and dreams in it. that personaly seems a bit more substantual in the long term than a cyber journal? It seems lame to tic a rt in the data base without a coment ? I click on a rt and there are tics but no comments? It seems to me that if your gonna tic it on the net for all to see that you would share some info as to what it was like? that is where i see the tic list as being usefull personaly. get some beta on rts and a feel of what it was like that day or that moment.. It kind of sucks when people click on your profile and assume that jst because you haven't used the online tic list that you haven't climbed anything. I climb about 2 to 3 days a week (sometimes 5 to 7 days a week) for well over twenty years but have only ticked two or 3 Rts on this site.? If you want to read an awsome online journal read amblers. Not suer where it is but i linked to it from neclimbs? Totaly blew me away. If he had just listed those climbs as a tic list it would not have made an impression on me at all. reading in detail Amblers FA reports and other climbing experiences on climbs that i did in my youth and cherish as life changeing events was a special experience for me.

OK, I feel like I'm looking in the 'fridge for the peanut butter, but I'm looking right past it and not noticing. Where is this "ticklist"?

As we're building the new rockclimbing.com, we're enhancing the functionality and features around recording ascents. We hope more people will start using this.

We will also rename "tick list" to "hit list", to better indicate that it refers to those routes you still want to climb.

It's in your profile.

I don't use em. I started before I had a computer, so I'm sticking with a paper journal.

I remember when climbing achievements were documented between friends over a pint of beer... and only the significant ones were retold.... and journals were kept by 13 year old girls.

I used to use the rc.com ascents list, but the 8a.nu list shows your routes in a graphical pyramid form, which is much more useful if you are trying to figure out how hard your next project should be, so I switched.

The routes-you-want-to-climb thing ("tick list" on this site) never seemed that useful to me.

If you have to look at a graph to figuer out how hard you want to climb today you have issues. Climbing Journals have been arround about as long as climbing. Nothing wrong with them. I dislike the tic list that has no details. I guess what i am trying to say is that i prefer to read about climbs in a real journal. i want to hear the storys. If you just list the climbs as a list it is boring. If someone wants their climbing journal to be ona blog so be it. I think its safer to have it on paper. If you do blog it, make suer that it is backed up.
