Today at about 10:00am Rebecca (aka granite_grrl) fell at Mt. Nemo in Milton, Ontario. I don't know all the particulars about the fall, but I do know she fell while placing a piece and hit a ledge on her way down ending 40 feet from where she slipped. I don't know if any gear ripped; i don't know if the last piece she clipped ripped/failed/never got clipped; I don't know how far she fell until she hit the ledge. I do know that she is in intensive care in a hamilton hospital with a broken femur, a fractured skull, a collapsed lung, and some other injuries. She was wearing a helmet, which saved her life according to the officer at the scene after the accident. Those of you who know Rebecca also know how compassionate, strong, and how great of a friend and person she is. Those who don't can take my words as a testament to these qualities. What I would like and the reason I started this thread is for people to show your support for a fallen friend in her time of need. Any kind words or encouragement I'm certain she will be grateful for. If you have more questions about the accident, please PM me and if there is enough interest I will start another thread to address these issues. I will say that i was not present and have acquired all of this information third hand from her belayer and I will do what I can to answer questions. Thank you all Brent Elliott

Wow... terrible news. I've never met granite_grrl, but she has been such a huge presence within these forums that I needed to come into this thread to learn more. I hope she recovers fully and quickly, and has the courage to continue such an active participation in this sport which has obviously been a huge part of her life.

Brent - thanks for the info. Please keep me up to date on her progress (either posting here or via PM). I only wish I could do more from out here but at least let her know my thoughts are with her. Rebecca - you better shape up quick and read this soon  You know I'm looking forward to seeing you out here soon and climbing together again so you be good eh girl and get your innoculation against my bad jokes while they have an IV in you. Nate - give her a little TLC, and look after her. Seriously though, all my best wishes for a full and speedy recovery.

Very sorry, hope the best. It would be nice to have some more details of the accident posted for others to learn from. Did a piece come out, was the climb hard to protect? Was it a comfortable climb for her, or towards her limit? Had she done it before, etc.. whatever you think might help educate others.

I had a friend like that pass away three weeks ago. not a climber but very pasionate about sports and life always had a smile on his face! A great guy never once during the entire time i knew him was he a jerk... only 16 years old died in a car crash not him driving  . But you are in my thoughts and sending the good energy to you miss and all of your friends I know its a hard time... but you'll pull through sound like a very strong woman! Good luck with your speedy recovery to get back on that granite.

In reply to: Very sorry, hope the best. It would be nice to have some more details of the accident posted for others to learn from. Did a piece come out, was the climb hard to protect? Was it a comfortable climb for her, or towards her limit? Had she done it before, etc.. whatever you think might help educate others. With all respect, I believe the purpose of this thread is simply to show support for Rebecca and family. Perhaps we can leave the analysis to later and allow Rebecca to make a report IF she so chooses. Recent postings on this site in relation to another friends accident lead me to feel the climbing communties desire to analyse personal accidents should be secondary to privacy considerations. Please keep this thread to well wishing and allow Rebecca the courtesy of choosing to analyse the accident or not in a thread she starts for that... Thanks mate.
