I'm going to be moving out west for the winter, and i want to choose a place that will allow both climbing and XC skiing. I can go anywhere, so what's the _best_ place?

If you don't mind the LDS then go to Salt Lake City UTAH. Awsome powder and a sh!t load of great climbing

Bozeman Montana has Big Sky ski resort 45 minutes away and the awsome Bridger Bowl area (20 min drive) for skiing. Hyalite canyon has incredible ice climbing made famous by the late Alex Lowe, and is right outside town.

Jackson's ice involves long approaches, and there isn't a whole lot of easy to moderate stuff. Great Alpine ice in the spring and summer though. Of course the skiing is the best in the country, but don't let too many know about that.

Jackson can be somewhat hit or miss for snow pack, but the average annual snow fall approaches 500". Anyone you has been here on a really good year will know that it is hard to find a better place especially considering the combination of light powder and the accessibility of insane terrain both inbounds and backcountry. There is a reason why guys like Steven Koch(first snow board descent of the Black Ice Couloir) picked jackson as their training ground. If you want steep and technical, the Tetons are it.

Salt Lake area has tons of great powder and backcountry terrain (some say it's the best). I've never skiied anything different. There's also a lot of very decent road-side ice climbing. And some very rewarding climbs if you want to suffer through the long approaches. Provo's 'Stairway to Heaven' and 'BridalVeil Falls' are very popular climbing areas.
I would also recommend the Ouray, CO area for ice. I mean, after all, they do have an ice park. But, they also have great 'natural' ice climbs there as well. And you have Telluride.

Yeah, thanks for the life lesson, that's definately one to grow on. My point is that you are shoveling it pretty damn thick in the forums as of late. No harm, no foul tough guy.
Back to the topic at hand. BC has some great skiing, as do the Cascades. But in my opinion Light dry Utah pow is more fun than anything. I also LOVE Jackson. The Tetons have an ice route or two and the steeps there are gonzo tough and exposed. All of these areas are great as far as the original question goes.
Woof yourself.
Edit: yes I have skied those places and many others. My bc skills are finely honed and my quads do not need any help.
Next up: Europe.
Chominix / Verbier should put this little debate into the realm of the pointless.

I agree with the first reply... Golden BC is a great plce for skiing, and it has some of the best Ice / Mixed climbing in north america!!! Plus, if you're from the States, your dollar is like Gold up here, so your money will go a long way. Ohh yah, all the kokanee beer you can drink

CA is not a good place for ice climbing. Many places are better. The backcountry skiing is great and the XC can be good in some areas, but you have much better choices.

That's Chamonix, but yeah - nothing in North America even comes close for good and bad
- incredible terrain - nowhere in NA where you can hold down a job and then shoot off for the weekend allows you to do such amazing climbing/skiing.
- few places in America can match the crowds and terrible weather. It's still the best there is for a working guy.

I've often thought of Jackson as the Chamonix of the Lower 48 (but I might be slightly biased). The terrain is mildly impressive, the crowds are rather dense on classics, and the weather is slightly odd.
Where else can you get superb alpine climbing every weekend and a few thousand feet of tele turns before breakfast every morning.

Climber's Guide to the High Sierra has the ice couliers, and other climbs. For the most part, the ice isn't safe until around October. For skiing, the snow at Mammoth stays cold longer, because the slopes face north. Plus, that's about the steepest section of the East side of the Sierras. Tahoe ski areas suffer from the huge lake, which acts like a gigantic heat source to melt the snow quickly. Still, right after a storm, California ski areas are OK.

Try Durango, the ice begins five minutes outside of town and as you drive north only gets better, Silverton and then Ouray, can't beat the San Juans for concentration of easily accessible ice routes. The skiing is awesome also, Purgatory, Telluride and Wolf Creek are all easily accessible with massive amounts of backcountry, that is if you can stomach trustafarians.

VALDEZ for ice climbing and the most extreme skiing in N.A.
The Chugach gets over 1000 inches of snow in an average year...
Cross-country ski touring is great if you don't mind a little cold and a little dark!!!

Man, you can tell you really got Fleadawg rattled there - he almost typed an entire message in normal English!
I think this is a great discussion.... gives me more ideas of where to go vacation! I've skied both Chamonix and Verbier, by the way, and based on my experience, I would definitely go back to Verbier, but pass on Chamonix. Incredible skiing, incredible views, and incredibly cheap! I hopped off the train, rented skis, bought the "all-access pass", and spent the day playing away, for somewhere around $40. Lift tickets alone in CO are close to $60 a day for the big resorts. It's been a few years, but considering that most stuff in Switzerland was more expensive than the US, I was pleasantly surprised to find the skiing to be much cheaper.
