I've known Majid for about 14 years. I've climbed with him a handful of times. Here's my take:
He is obsessed with safety to the point of absurdity. I have wondered whether climbing is simply a venue for him to discuss/preach safety issues. (He would probably have just as much fun discussing the dangers encountered while cooking dinner.)
He is enamored with anything SAR. Vertical. Alpine. River. Lake. You name it. He wants to be part of it. He takes SAR classes whenever and wherever he can. Volunteers at YOSAR. Volunteers for Santa Clara County SAR. Goes to Pakistan and teaches a SAR clinic while he's there. He's obsessed with SAR. What else can I say?
He is frickin' cynical. He also has a very dry sense of humor, and it can be hard to know when he's joking. He is very bright.
He is a genuinely nice guy - a bit wierd and certainly with his own idiosynchrocies, but a very nice guy, for sure.
So don't knock the guy for his safety fetish. It's just how he is. In fact, be glad he's around. RC.com benefits by having somebody that far to that side of the spectrum. I know I'll never spend any time searching the net for accident reports, etc. But I'm glad someone does. (And I'm glad it's not me.)

A better question is, why are people on rc.com so xenophobic?
I enjoy his posts, and I am put off by people who are rude to him.
