Ok, I watched specimen, and those dumb ass front range locals, should not be allowed to practice bouldering. They are in for the "asthetics" , OMG, go to hell. They are all pissed cause they can't climb anything badder than v8. So none of the climbs were rated, and PLUS, the best boulderer ever, Fred Nichole, was only in it for like two seconds, other than that it was just a bunch of dumb ass "new age" , "find myself in bouldering", "new york bullshit". If any of you have bought this bouldering video, I feel bad for you, if you like it, call up a dood, cuz you might be gay.

well i dont now if i totally agree with you on this one.

ceder wright.....dude is so openly flamboant, this was obviously his coming out moment

lisa rands....yeah trying to explain bouldering like we are all third graders is anoying, and im pretty sure she wants to deflower daniel woods..."he is soo easy to talk to" yeah what she realy wanted to say is "he likes to cuddle after we sesh, he is burl but has emotions"

daniel woods...ok so the dude is burl, get off his nuts. i mean who the hell is a 16 kid going to be more "enlightend" in the bouldering world than someome like nicole? i hate this society for that main reason, so new kid on the block has all the answers...umm no he is just strong as hell and wont really improve for the rest of his life (ie look at all the badasses, all the really do is maintain form)

fred nicole...dude is a mutant....so why the hell did they not film his send worth a shit? he sends witness the fitness, no footage, he sends espransa no pics or footage, he sends V15-V16's all over the world and no footage, and then there is a DVD with him in it? i was pumped, but like cheap coke i was dissapointed.

in the end what got from the flick was it was marketed towards noobs and idiots that no nothing about climbing, and so ceder could come out (im pretty sure his boyfriend was the producer).

now im not dissing him for coming out, thats whatever, but do i need to buy a $20 DVD to see that? quit publicizing it, quit writing books about it, its gettting old. wake up and just look in the mirror and be like "so i do dudes, and im not going to be in denial about it".....but dont go out and find a publicist and make a book, or a DVD about it, your not the first or the last gay man to do that, its getting cliche.

Andy Raether is at my gym all week and he is showing the movie this weekend. I have only seen the trailer and all the talking and pontificating about random bullshit seemed a bit over the top but I will give it a chance when I watch it.

I think in general climbing films are probably more like porn movies in that less talking is usually better...

I have a feeling you will be right. It was a bad sign when the trailer was almost exclusively interviews and very little climbing.

I think it is probably on purpose that Fred is always one step ahead of the crowds with cameras repeating and bashing the grading of his FA's

fred most likely just does not want to be filmed...i bet he doesnt want the uncormfortable god worship sharma and graham get.

The film is good for number of reasons.
ya see some people climb for...you guessed it...the aestetics. I understand some people climb for the grade (i am guilty myself), but there is something about watching some of the most badass boulders on easy stuff just for the sake of climbing.

The movie is not advertized as a dosage "watch people send stuff you cant get off the ground on" video. It is a journy of self discovery. Cedar Wright (yes he is quite and excited person) finds a deeper meaning in a "sport" he enjoys. If anyone out there is climbing cause its cool, or it makes them look bad w/ their shirt off...well then ofcourse you wont like the video.

Why watch a video like a porn...you watch amazing climbs from these guys who then are treated like celebs by people who have never met, or know anything about them other than they can send.

get off other peoples nuts...watch better videos...and climb for something more than your self.

What constitutes "better videos" is subjective and there's not a climber out that I worship.

It's okay if you prefer single X climbing porn.........I'll take triple X thanks. Wink

Right...like watching this movie and actually liking it means I'm a "real" rock climber and a better person. This movie makes me want to get away from the climbing culture that takes the sport too seriously and over analyzes everything.

I'm going to go boulder an "aestetic" line now.

oh yah, and I am sure Fred would just hate to be "god worshipped".

It's usually pretty easy to make awesome trailers for even the worst films so when I saw the awful trailers for this it was pretty easy to decide against having any interest in seeing the whole thing. From the trailers the film seemed poorly shot (way too dark and way too many wide shots) and extremely pretentious (which is often what happens when you ask people deep questions and they try to provide "deep" responses - 3rd grade crap-poetry). From what I've read here, I'm glad I haven't suffered the indignity of the full specimen.

it seems easy for everyone to criticize... i also suffered through this movie. Its slow and has a lot of dialog. But i do commend them for trying to get a different perspective on the sport.

While it wasn't very enjoyable, it struck me that if I wanted to hear climbers pontificate about how spiritual climbing can be, I'd buy my friends an eighth and some beer. When I go see a climbing movie, typically I expect super sick moves, not self discovery. Of course, I'm always down for a good documentary, and that might've been what Chuck was going for. Still not impressed by this one though.

I enjoyed the movie. It certainly wasn't my favorite climbing movie but, aside from all the talking, it wasn't bad. I enjoyed watching the bonus features with the director climbing as well.

I'd much rather watch people climb easier routes for fun. I get into it more. There's more to climbing than sending 5.14. Even the best climbers have to have fun sometime.

I was very happy to see a movie that wasn't like every other stupid climbing movie out there. To me, watching people send the hardest routes in the world gets old very quickly. I know I can't do them so it doesn't mean much to me that someone else can. I'd rather watch people having fun on routes that I could do.

That is the point...aside from the talking there was very little climbing.

No one is complaining about the climbing in the movie, we are all bitching about the lack there of.

Do you assume we all want to see 5.14+ climbing in all vids? No one here is complaing about Return To Sender, which shows old guys climbing 5.11 cracks...it was great!

I have to say that after watching the movie I don't really understand all the negative critiques. Sure, it was a bit different from most climbing movies in that there weren't numbers flying across the screen, but there was still hard sending going on if you knew anything about the problems featured. I thought the movie was well filmed and I liked the whole storyline idea.

The segments of narrative and talking really weren't that over the top I didn't think. I thought for the most part the actual visuals were very well done although I would have liked more closeups of the holds as they were climbing.

Overall I would say that it is definitely one of the better climbing movies that I have seen.

It was a good movie just it was not shot in the same way that most bouldering videos are done. They showed the movement of the problem not the holds themselves most of the time. In Dosage you see the holds and in this Specimen you see the whole entire problem. The talking was a little much but some parts of the talking was good, but most of it was... there.

That was the one thing I missed. When you are watching a super strong climber do a boulder from a wide angle you really can't tell if the problem is V4 or V14 if you don't have any idea how big the holds are.

i got this movie for Christmas and the intro of the movie had all that weird science stuff and made it look like it was gonna be the best climbing movie ever. i agree that there was too much talking about climbing and not enough climbing but all those climbers were really good besides cedar. there was probably more of cedar climbing than everyone else combined and everyone else was so much more fun to watch.

my opinion: cedar ruined the movie

One thing worth checking out on the DVD is the bonus menu. There is a short 10 minute film in there of Chuck, and it has him working on a pretty nice V13, or I think it was a V13, and some decent Dyno problems, and they show the holds much closer and show a higher level of climbing, and the ratio to climbing to talking is better than the actual film itself.

yeah thats cool and all, but chuck was a selfish little noob and showing only him in the extras section. leave the self promotion for youtube....

ceder is the worst thing to ever happen to the climbing comunity that i have ever seen, i would rather climb on a chipped 5.9 then have to hang out or worse, hear his high pitches fairy ass voice after topping out a V0...

the movie sucks, ceder sucks, chuck sucks for his petty attempt of self promotion, and asc climber really sucks at topping out V6's (well only V6, cause he only has one under his scrawny little belt)

hurray for squirrel fingers
