I like the posture of the climber, but the background is somewhat distracting. I can't tell if thats just noise or a blacked forest or what. But I think you have all the elements of a great picture.

I like the positioning of the climber and the composition but I also find the background rather distracting. I think there's too much contrast between the shadows in the background and the highlights in the rock. It's a hard thing to control given the situation and not too much you can really do about it other then recompose the shot to crop out more of the background. Jason

Definitely worth a second look, I say. Bearing in mind my lack of photographic skill, I'd say: Pluses: - camera angle: The cliff base doesn't run horizontally across the photo, which makes it more interesting. - climber position: He's reaching, it looks tricky, and adds motion to the shot. - photographer position: The rope/gear aren't immediately obvious, so they add to the tension at first glance and don't distract. Minuses: - the ground: Yep, it's distracting. I'd personally crop some of it out. Depending on your thoughts, also maybe try and regain some colour in that section (Photoshop, etc). Overall, well, it's pretty good, by my standards at least.

Thanks everyone for the comments! I was not sure initially if the black background would add to the drama or unbalance the shot but everyone seems to agree it would be better without it. It was difficult to shoot as the light was pretty harsh. I had to use high speed to avoid overexposing the rock, in expense to the background which was in the shadow.
