Are there any tent camp sites near the hammond pond area? Lets say a 15 mile radius?

There does not seem to be any state campgrounds that close. Don't know about private ones.

No, but there's a youth hostel in downtown Boston.

Hammond Pond is in a metropolitan setting, you know.

It's possible that there's are campsites in the Blue Hills Reservation. That's the only place I could think of.

Edited to add: yes, apparently the AMC operates a campground at the Blue Hills on Ponkapoag Pond. Call (781) 961-7007 for reservations.

The Blue Hills are about 10 miles from Hammond Pond. There's climbing in the Blue Hills, too. Look up "Rattlesnake Rocks".

Oh, and just for the record, this is one of the weirdest requests I've seen on rc.com.

GO

My sister is running the boston marathon in april. I am her half point refuel/water person in Wellesley. Im poor and was planning on doing some bouldering while i was in the area. Cheap tent campsites instead of hotels in boston the weekend of the race.

Thanks for the insite.

Hmm, interesting. Here is the website:

Where you coming from? If you can get up to Pawtuckaway State Park in southern NH (just over the border, about 1 hr from Boston) on the way here or after the Marathon, then you should. The quality and quantity of the bouldering between Hammond/Blue Hills and Pawtuck is like the difference between throwing a bullet and shooting it.

Also, Lincoln Woods in Rhode Island is just under an hour from Boston, and far better bouldering then the urban spots.

Here is some New England bouldering info:

I don't think Ponkapaug is open in April and even if it were - "cheap" is not an adjective useful in describing it. I'm sure there are places in the Blue Hills where you could get away with a low key bandit bivy for a day or two. There would even be places closer to Wellesley where that would be possible (Chestnut Hill Resevoir used to have a hermit). But I really don't think there are any legitimate CGs within 30 miles of Boston (hardly anything inside of 495 except well to the south). This is an urban setting and you have to adjust accordingly. Hostels and YMCAs ar your best bet (and probably cheaper then any legit campsite too).

While I am giving out barely solicited advice - I hope you are familar with what Marathon day is like around Wellesley. It's a zoo. IMO you'd be better off to set up a rendezvous somewhere a bit away from the 1/2 way point. the 128 overpass or even firehouse corner in Newton. Both those spots are places where a pick-me-up is really needed. The Wellesley College students handle that task quite well at the 1/2 way point.
