I'd go for the D40 over the D40x. As an entry-level photographer you'll have little or no need for that extra resolution. I got the D40 with the 18-55 lens for both my kids and the photos they make with them are simply amazing. I've convinced that the D40 is the best camera you can get for under $1500. Don't know anything about the 400d so I'm unqualified to comment on it. I shoot a D200, love it and wouldn't trade if for anything right now. I will soon be buying a D40 as my second camera though. It's super lightweight, compact, has a great meter, top-notch TTL flash system and costs only $599 with a lens. BTW, that lens, even though made from cheap feeling plastic shoots amazingly colorful and sharp photos. It's as sharp as you need for anything except looking at test grid patterns with a loupe and if you're into that, God help you.

Malcom is a good person to take advice from because he doesn't a) seem to give a rats ass about what the more professional camera is b) he has both a D200 (IIRC) and a D40.
As far as needing more res, no one really does. With a good lens and technique a 6MP should be able to produce about 20X30in print (about 100 pixels per printed inch). Not many people print that big to begin with so the typical 11x14 or 12x18 should be cake (i've printed quite a few 11x14s with the Sony 6MP found in the D40).
The D40X or D40 are both fine. Both have a lot of drop down features from the D80. The D40 should have better high ISO resolution because the as we saw with the D200 ISO noise jumped with the Sony 10MP sensor. Although the D200 seems to be worse than the other cameras using the sensor, I think it has to do with the 4 channel converter.
What you get with the D40 is a bit better firmware/tweaking of the sensor. It's native ISO is 200 which can be good or bad. Good for sports/action, lower light, but not as good for things were you want to increase exposure time (waterfalls, panning, etc). Nikons done a nice job with the D80 tweaking the 10MP sensor to give lower noise at higer ISO. I assume the D40X uses similar noise reduction.
But I do have to seriously disagree with Malcom on one thing. Please tell me how the D40/X is anywhere near as good as the K10D? Perhaps you meant under $700 where I'd still have to disagree but at least we could rationally argue over that.

I plead ignorance on the K10D. Is that the Pentax? I've heard rumors that it's great. I think it takes a leap of faith to switch away from one of the big brands. I don't have the sack for that.

It is infact Pentax. No leap required for me, been shooting Pentax since I was first allowed to use my Dad cameras at 10ish.
