Spindrift running down the back of my jacket chills my neck and head as my fingers pump in to blinding agony. The ice kicks back to vertical as my crampons scratch for purchase and my calf’s burn with lactic acid. The sickness swelling in my gut finally gets to my head as the fear grips me. I reach for my short screw all the while fumbling to get the other gear out of it's way. Mark yells up ”you got it”, as I question my sanity! Finally I get the screw off the rack and unclip my leash from the tool. I then push heavily on the screw's head to get it started into the bullet proof ice. The teeth bite in as the screw displaces the blue translucent ice. Time moves as slow as a snail. I watch it sink deeper, thinking how long till I fly. Finally it’s in! I clip the screamer on to the screw and without a thought the rope is soon clipped in also. I feel scared as I reach higher and swing the tool, and think about my form. The tool sticks. Pull, kick, pull, kick, and soon I work my way over the bulge. The cold and pain make the screaming barfie’s come. Then anchors, it is over, finally over. I look down to mark and realize this most dam fun I have ever had, lower me. God I love climbing ice
