Well, I don't know for sure where one could find the best ice in the midwest, but one of the highest densities of ice routes in the midwest can be found along the shore of Lake Superior (well, much of it is really canda, but whatever...)

Depends on what you refer to as being the midwest? I grew up east of St. Louis so everything west of there is considered West to me. What area do you want to know about. I might be able to point you to some hidden mixed areas.

If you find yourself in northern MN, keep right on driving north to Orient Bay in Canada. Fabulous climbing there.

the black hills have excellent moderate ice climbing. route descriptions and photos are in the routes db.

These are the places that I've climbed around the "midwest" area and loved. Please feel free to add any more areas to this list.
In Utah
Provo Canyon: some really big stuff, but overcrowded at times. Home of Stairway to Heaven, and Bridalveil Falls.
Santaquin Canyon: good ice and mixed climbing.
Maple Canyon
Mahlen's Waterfall in Ogden
Logan has a few climbs, but not very big.
In Colorado
Ouray: ice park, good climbs in surrounding area.
Silverton: Another Stairway to Heaven which is very fun.
Telluride: Another Bridalveil Falls, also good.
Vail: good mixed climbing.. and ice.
Boulder Canyon
In Wyoming
Cody: great climbing here. Usually one hour approaches but a lot of the climbs are around 5 pitches and very enjoyable. Try Mean Green, High on Boulder, or Broken Hearts.

Sheesh, come on guys. Utah, CO, WY, Black Hills - these are NOT the midwest. Think central time zone, people.
Sirjohn, Lake Superior area has what you're looking for. You might try being a bit more specific about where you live, and how far you're willing to drive. I used to live in Minnesota, and Orient Bay was a long ways up there. If you live in Missouri or something, you might as well forget it. I believe the UP of Michigan also has good ice.

There are some good waterfall ice in and around the Twin Cities, MN. It's fairly short, but when the ice is in it's very climbable. Along Lake Superior probably holds the best routes, depending on the weather for the season. Last year was really tough of ice routes here, hopefully this year holds some better conditions.

The previous poster is right, Starved Rock State Park has great ice... when it freezes. Last year I heard there were only 2 weeks of good climbing since the midwest got hit with a warm winter. Do a search on Yahoo, you will find pictures of the climbs, directions to the area, some route info, and one site even keeps ice conditions posted. Good luck.

For Starved Rock State Park check out www.gearexpress.com they are near the park and post notices when the flows are in.

Hmmmm, that doesn't give anything away at all, does it?
I have seen decent ice in Nebraska, Iowa, southern Minnesota, and southwest Wisconsin. It's midwest, not all that tall, but don't have to drive for 2 days just to get there. I've also heard (never seen) that some stuff forms up around Sam's Throne, Arkansas.
