I am going to be in maui, HI for 10 days and just wondered if anyone knew of some dws or sport climbs on the island. Checked the routes section, not too much there.

not much climbing.... and i think oahu is the best place to rope up.

we went to waimea beach park yesterday there were about....

15-20 boulder problems with an easy 2 minute walk off. the roads were closed to the roped climbing due to a brush fire, but we are planning on hitting up the roped climbing sunday with a local.

When you get up there, let us know what you think of the setup... a bit of an ethics debate

I think the set up for that area is ok Pull the string down and lead if you want to lead our pull your cord through if you want to TR although you could just stick clip up most things there if you wanted to set up a TR also. But hey for basalt one of the safest places I,ve been to. But hey go to Hi. to surf and leave your gear at home the waves are amazeing!!!

rock quality at waimea was very solid, the local site http://rockclimbinghawaii.com said that waimea was sharp (wasn't as sharp as our local limestone in austin) and the rock seems bullet. i can't wait to rope up over here!

what is the ethics debate??? you mean about having the toprope pulley system? that's not an ethics debate, that's a style debate!

for the most part i'm a sport climber who loves trad, so i don't have some big-headed ethic about toproping! hehe. but i have to say the climbing shop here is FREAKING RAD. Mike has tons of cams (inexpensive for retail) all kinds of gear that i hadn't ever even seen in a catalog! We picked up some sweet accessories and made plans to climb sunday i'm amped! (dude even had ballnuts! i've only ever read about them, never seen a picture heh)

I climbed with a local at Waimea a few months ago and it was great fun. It's an easy (and pleasant) drive from Honolulu, and worth it just for the view. The climbing was a lot of fun, too. I had heard that the rock was slick, but it was nothing compared to Devil's Lake.

My experience was: super friendly people; fun, interesting climbing; and an awesome atmosphere.

The TR setup makes it a little like an outdoor gym, but I think that is true of any TR area, regardless of how you get the ropes up there. The strings aren't visible until you get up to the crag, and, to my knowledge, there's little reason to go up there other than to climb.
