Mount Whitney. 14,495. Climbed the East face. Yes altitude is a funny thing; the youngest (23) strongest guy in our group of 3 was the only one throwing up all night.

Bear Creak Spire, 13,713, via the North Arete, Grade III, 5.8, Rock Creek Area, Eastern Sierras. Has about 4 pitches of technical climbing and then a summit ridge. Right as me and my partner we reaching the summit area, I turn back and see a solo climber pop up over the top of the Arete. He flew up the ridge and was next to us at the summit in very short order. Low and behold, it was Peter Croft, who had soloed the East Ridge earlier.

Anyway, I am headed up to the Palisades in a month, so I will have a new high point shortly (with a little good fortune).

As to Everest being a walk-up. I read Into Thin Air and was quite impressed with the ordeal those people went through. Then, the very next day, I read that some Slav climbed the thing and skied down in like 3 hours. Now, it can't be too difficult if you can ski down.

One last thing, climber1, Tuolumne is 8,500 or so, but the guy said the top of the climber was 11k. That probably puts him on Cathedral 10,940, or Unicorn, a bit over 11,000

My highest so far is Cayambe (5790 m) 18991 ft in the Eastern Cordillera of the Ecuadorean Andes. A long slog with little technical dificulty. Be prepared for travel in crevasse fields and ice falls though. The climbers hut is at 15,250 ft. Sleeping there I had classic altitude sickness symptoms: nausea, insomnia, minor headaches. It all went away on summit day though. Maybe because of the Coca Tea we drank before climbing. Check out the photos on the following site.

My highest point is Mt. Elbert
I second Madscientists' and others point about the crazy effect of altitude, particularly on the Diamond. From what I've experienced and heard altitude is a crapshoot but always a study in suffering

I guess mine would be Tocllaraju (6032m)in the Ishinca Valley of Peru. More notably however was our go on Alpomayo (5947m). My partner and I teamed up with these two crazy Swedes and climbed the French Direct last summer. What an incredible route, I highly recommend it over the typical Ferrari... which ends up being a bowling alley I have heard. Cotopaxi, Cayambe, Ishinca, and the Grand Teton are some other 'moderates' I have had the pleasure of summiting on. As for the effects of altitude, to date I have only encountered minor sleeplessness and even more minor headaches that go away when I breathe through pursed lips...Climb On

Being from the beautiful country of Ecuador, I've climbed Cayambe(5790m) Cotopaxi (5930m) and didn't summit Chimborazo, which is (6310m), but did get around 6000m...not too much compared to what i'm planning to get, i'm only 17!power to the young!!

I lived in Quito, the capital of Ecuador, which is located at 2500m, so you basically live in altitude/high altitude for some...love it!!

Mt.Elbert, 14,433 ft. Currently working on all the 14'ers in CO. I've done 14 in the past 2 years. My goal is to summit 1-2 per month. Kilimanjaro is my dream!

My highest point is 3,765 mts, that's 12,550 feet. Not too much

Not much to say, just was colder and this caused a little of bit of pain on my fingers.

Personally, want to try to train there. Training at high altitud makes yor body produce a lot more of hemoglobine.

Well, I've done some 14ers in CO, so nothign truly impressive. As for altitude, usually I'm just short of breath. You know, 4 steps per breath instead of 8 or whatever that ratio is. The one time it kicked my behind though, was a morning after a good party. I guess the additional dehyrdation from the night's festivities put me into uncharted waters so to speak.

Now I'm living in WV for the fall semester, and I'm almost dreading my first trip up a mt come Winter break. That is probably going to hurt.

My most challenging high point visit was in northern Ohio. It's up in Bellefontaine and is over 466 meters above sea level. While approaching the summit, I tried to tap into my oxygen tank but fumbled it because of being such a technophobe. It was was a welcome change to return to the more moderate elevations of Ohio with with their richer atmospheres. Closer to my home is the high point of the Hoosier state which is not so dreadfully high as in Ohio. It however has a more technical approach- through corn fields so flat that the high point is hidden from all those who have not mastered the GPS.

wow some amazing adventurers around!

mt fuji - 10365 ft, it's a highway with a noodle shop at the top. only in japan (i can say that b/c i'm half japanese).

mt kenya - 5200 m (? ft) non technical - but two of the three peaks are technical, nairobi's already at about 1700 m so if you're acclimatized, a 3 day trip up mt kenya is incredible and it isn't that hard - way more beautiful than mt. kili! mind you 1 in 4 gets sick and has to come down. that sucks

indian himalaya - something over 4000m not too far from nanda devi sanctuary

I have recently started trying to go to all the state highpoints (great excuse to see the country.) I have Denali, Rainier (lots), Hood, Boundary Peak in Nevada (nice hike), along with Humphries Peak in AZ (great trail to run!); Mt. Blanc, and although not a summit, got to 21,000' on Ama Dablam North Ridge b.i.t.d. (back in the day!) Looking forward for more.
Two thoughts: one, for alpinice; altitude feels like you want to breathe but you just can't because you left all your air in camp, so you gulp, gasp, and moan and once in a while take a step and curse your stupidity for not going to Yosemite where you can get the same feeling by throwing yourself up on a wall, but at least you will forget the feeling at altitude because your brain is fried from being there, and you won't even notice the memory loss until later when folks ask how it went ;
two, for hallm: I am not sure if it is fair to suggest that Everest is not difficult because someone skied down the thing. Different conditions create different climbs, and different climbers abilities play a huge factor. No one would suggest that the Nose is an easy free climb just because a short "chick" climbed it. Now, I am not a skier in any sense of the word, nor could I follow Lynn Hill on her worst day on the rock, but the skier who succeeded on Everest did not do it in May, 1996, did he?

rollingstone - my comment regarding Everest was a bit tongue-in-cheek (hence the winking face). I agree that the conditions affect the climb, particularly on an 8K meter peak. I think the guy who skied down did in in 2000 sometime (which is when I read the book), and from his photos and video, the conditions look great. It just seemed a bit ironic to me that a day after reading about this tragic ordeal, a guy skis down. That's all.

Yes, indeed. The great tragedy was on May 1996(climbing season). Davo Karnicar, i think, skiied down Mt. Everest on October of 2000, which was not during climbing season.

Mt. Baker clocks in at 10781ft (3286M), I've done that a couple of times along with Mt. Adams 12276ft (3742M), Mt. Rainier 14410ft (4392M) 3 times and a bunch of other miscellaneous smaller peaks in the cascades. Living in Seattle is great for the climbing bug in me.

not to be too nit-picky, but October can be considered climbing season, as it is after the summer monsoons. It is close to winter, though...odd time to go for it. But at least there would be less crowds....

I'm thinking probably 6100 feet on Byers peak. Here's a panorama of where I live from there.

Mt. Bierstadt, 14,060 ft. Where I have succesfully: vomited up a power bar (I told him I couldn't stand them), and get out hiked by my (formerly, and at the time) 3 pack a day smoker brother, and my cousin from Louisville, KY. And I've been higher on Grays, but I turned back because of lighting.

My highpoint -- 20,320 ft.

Highest technical rock was Hairline on Mt. Whitney. But since we spent more than a week up there, that climb didn't feel nearly as hard as pulling onto the summit ice cap of Rainier, in whiteout, wearing a 40-lb pack, after climbing Success Cleaver. The exit I'd guess was about 5.6 with some crampon and axe moves. Hammered my b*tt good!
