Jay, for the first time in at least 15 years, I can sleep thru the night without waking up because my hands have gone numb. the cutting was worth it. easternadventure, where abouts in MA are you located? boston? metrowest? western MA? central? that'll help in finding partners.

Hey there, just wanted to throw out a reminder on how dry it is out there. I was a Hammond Pond on Friday and the ground was smoldering behind the alcove. Seemed like somebody threw a cigarette butt and got the ground burning. We called the Firefighters and they were sucking wind by the time they got up there (scary)... It took quite a bit for them to put it out (actually needed to pull the hose up). Remember, only you can prevent forest fires.

Hey guys, Just checking in with the weekend TR. This weekend was an exercise in managed discomfort. Despite the poor weather prospects, Matt Mendoza and I drove up to Cannon on Saturday. Driving into the notch, an opaque fog encompassing the cliff, and we wondered "did Cannon all fall down?" Turns out Cannon was still there, and we roped up on Vertigo. The pitches went by quickly and smoothly (double ropes for the pendulum were a big bonus), and perhaps before we were really ready, we stood at the bottom of the half moon crack. Looking up at the pitch (looked longer than I expected), I set two rules for myself. First (and foremost), don't fall. Second, no whining. Grunting is ok, but no whining. So, with much grunting, but no whining, I thrutched inch by inch up the half moon. Finally exiting the top left me a distinct feeling of accomplishment. Well, it was either accomplishment or a need to vomit. Not really sure. Either way, we polished Vertigo off in good time, rapped down and took a bonus lap on reppy's before returning back to boston before sunset. In keeping with a weekend of discomfort, I then returned to new hampshire for a day at rumney with matt smith, lissa and kathryn (both first time climbers). The upside of climbing in the pouring rain is you dont need chalk and there are no crowds. The downside is that its cold and wet. But, with incredibly high spirits, we took some rain laps at the meadows and had the distinct pleasure of watching people get to the top of their first outside climbs. When fully chilled to the bone, we then sought out hot coco with a vengeance. Tim

Nice... Rumney is totally climbable in the rain if you accept a few things... a) it'll be cold.. b) you'll be soaked so hopefully you're not camping that night c) add a grade or a few. Most of the meadows is pretty good even when wet.. actually i find the harder stuff.. to be easier. ie the unlabeled 10b to the R of Bonehead roof, Reposession, L&P, No money down is doable but the top traverse is even creepier than normal. Done most of the slabs wet but i find those to be more unnerving.. i trust my hands wet more than my feet. Oh.. my weekend. REI sale saturday.. got some bike shorts and a prana shirt on the cheap. Sunday.. bought a road bike on the cheap and went for a quick 12mi ride with kate. Thing flies compared to my mtn bike.. handles the road bumps alot more than i thought but my mtn bike training in rocky milford and other MA spots has my shock absorbing skills honed up. picture of it is somewhere on this site.. :)

Congrats, Tim and Matt! Yeah, like you, we'd thought about a lap on Moby Grape after Vertigo, but somehow a lap on Reppys seemed to be quite enough, thanks. Cheers! GO

Hey folks, a bit late for the check-in, but work has been too hectic the past couple of days. Went to Cannon and did Lakeview, with some route-finding difficulty. We then conveniently got caught in the rain on an attempt to hike to the summit to finish our day. Let's just say the nice, sticky slabs on the way up weren't so nice and sticky on the way down in the rain. We were going to do Whitney-Gilman on Sunday, but bailed due to the weather. Lakeview was enjoyable at the end, but pretty boring up until the last two pitches. We had a lot of little mishaps along the way (forgotten sleeping bags, dropped radios, etc), but it was still worth it to head up. Oh yeah, we just stayed at Lafayette. It was a decent option that I'd do again. Probably heading to the gunks this weekend.

Coltrane - I'd recommend you check out the gym called Carabiners. It's pretty close to you, in New Bedford. I'm not really familiar with the climbing scene on the South Shore, but you're about an hour from Quincy Quarries. There's folks there on a regular basis - if you go any nice weekend you'll find people there. Cheers! GO

Hi all, I've also just moved here, to Boston specifically. I'd like to meet some folks to climb with, possibly this weekend. Reply here or PM me if you're interested. I prefer climbing outdoors, especially while the weather's good, but I could be convinced to go indoors somewhere. -Don

Hi. I'll be coming out to Boston from Portland, OR on September 29th through the 2nd, and I was hoping to get a recommendation on a good, local crag. (sport is best...with climbs 5.6-5.9) It will be my first time climbing on the east coast, which I am really excited about! Also, if there is a weekly gathering of climbers that get out from the area, it would be great to join in. Thanks!
