OK I know how to top rope solo, no probs with that, but what sort of setup would you use to lead solo with a Petzl Basic? I know that it's probably a dumb question, and thanks in advance to everyone who's gonna say I need an experienced lead soloist to show me, but it's late, and I don't want to hurt my brain thinking too hard about it

Don't use an ascender to lead solo. You will surely die!

NO Never lead solo with a toothed ascender. You will end up ripping the sheath and possibly breaking the rope if you fall. Clove hitches are the cheapest, the soloist and silent partner are supposed to be good, and some use the grigri (although not reccomended by petzl). The idea is that you create a lower anchor for downward and a strong upward force, you tie one end of the rope to the anchor, clip into the rope with clove hitches tight to the anchor, and feed out rope when you move up clipping in pieces as you would normally do while leading (don't forget back up knots). This is a very advanced technique and if you ... ooops .... then you are responsible for rescuing yourself. Don't try it unless you are absolutely positive you can do it safely. Use back up knots because whatever the catching system is, it can fail. casey
