Petit Jean State Park is Off Limits to Climbing  (North_America: United_States: Arkansas)

The Arkansas Climbers Coalition was started to preserve and protect climbing areas in The Natural State through communication, education and land stewardship. In researching climbing areas around the state, the question of Petit Jean State Park came up. I talked with Wally Scherrey, the Park Superintendent yesterday (12.06.07). According to the Super, boulderers and rappellers have destroyed state property, desecrated archaeological artifacts and Native American art, and left chalk on pictographs that are hundreds of years old. To put it mildly, he's concerned. He said it's increased drastically in just the last year and that archaeological artifacts are being "desecrated at an alarming rate." When he grasped what ACC was about, he was glad I called. I said that most climbers are good stewards and conservationists, and that we would help put the word out about the official Petit Jean policy on climbing, which is-- it's forbidden. He said if climbers were caught, they would be issued a citation, and that destruction of Native American art and archaeology is actually a federal offense.

I've often wondered myself about Petit Jean's accessibility, and now I know. And so do you. There are plenty of other places to climb in The Natural State, so do everyone a favor and don't jeopardize climbing where the State Parks DO allow it-- Mt. Magazine and Pinnacle Mountain. Thanks.

Is it off limits to the locals or just people from out of state?

Why rock climb when you can just be an armchair climber. You have no access problems.
You can just sit around and fuss about this and that. Maybe if you would climb more and type less you would both be better.
You probably dont care that it's off limits because all you do is sit around and type anyway.
Bouldering starts at 5.11 so thats out.
research yourself

Easy enough to guess that even in Arkansas the state park rangers are all connected by email with one another. You start pissing in one park and the word will travel fast to the others as well as start hitting their internal monthly or quarterly reports.

Not the smoothest move - no matter how clever you think you really are...

I was just kidding anyway. Im hoping those guys have better things to do than read climbing forums.
I get the greatest amount of enjoyment out of this. Climbers are soo sensitive.

Freedom of speech man, I think that sucks they closed it. The state will go in and cut down all the trees and bulldoze whatever they want but they close petit jean to climbing because of a little chalk. Nevermind the kids spraypainting stuff.
Look what the state did to the top of MT. Magazine.
They just went in and raped the cliffline.
Am I wrong here.
They wanted to make money off of the view.
I think it's great to challenge what our govt. does to us. Not just sit back and say well thats the way it is.

I bet if they wanted to build a trail with wooden steps throughout the park they would. Sometimes what the state does to us is BS. How close is the interstate to the park??
This is just general conversation though right...

Dam dude, you just stupid. Or trolling. Or both.

Petit Jean has been closed to climbing for as long as I can remember. Not a new policy at all.

And Mt Magazine had a lodge on top as well as a small community before that.
