Wondering what anyone thinks about this. I'm an intermediate climber, indoor sport climbing basically. I will be getting a quintuple matrixectomy on my left foot and have no idea what effect this will have on my footholds etc!! Anyone know?

I've lost a few due to tight running shoes. After the initial soreness goes away, it is absolute bliss on the feet. Especially if your big toenail is missing. Climbing shoes have never fit so good as when I'm missing a few toenails.

I've sat down with a 6 pack and a hammer before with the intention of causing enough damage to lose my toenails. A 6 pack wasn't nearly enough.

My next idea is to go to the vet and get declawed.

I had ingrown toenails for years and finally had them surgically removed, and have never been sorry. I no longer have to worry about them, and they have never hurt while I was climbing. I did one time pick up several large sheets of plexiglass and the center one slipped out and landed on my toe, and I could definitely tell why toenails are there in the first place! Needless to say, I no longer pick up large stacks of heavy plexiglass.

One more thing . . . if your dog starts following you around a few days after surgery, trying to lick at your toes, go to the doctor. It means you've got an infection :-).

Seriously, though, if you're having trouble with them now, you'll be so happy to have them done, you'll never be sorry. Good luck, and hope you can get back to your climbing again soon!

I've lost only one toenail on my left foot and my climbing shoe feels much more comfortable now. I haven't noticed any big difference at all in footwork. It is only one though, going without four might be different but I would be surprised if you notice much difference.

Make sure to follow up on this though afterward, it would be interesting to know what happens!
