I've climbed 3 times last year and fell in love with it. I would like to learn and improve skills and also make some climbing friends. I currently live in southern ca Are there any beginner climbing groups or a beginner climbing partner who seriously want to make climbing into a regular hobby?

If I was in your position I would go to the local gym and meet some people, make some new friends and go climb with them. Doesn't get much easier than that.

If you need to know where some local gyms are look here. http://www.indoorclimbing.com/california.html Even if you don't want to make gym climbing a regular thing, it is a great place to meet other climbers. The gym may have a monthly "meet up" that would be the perfect place to meet other people looking for climbing partners. At a smaller gym, the staff can probably point out someone that needs a partner for the day. If it is a big /busy gym they may even announce over the PA that someone is looking for a partner. It can feel awkward to join into some other pairs or threesomes that are climbing ropes together... but in the bouldering area you can pretty much just ask people what problems they are working on and hang out and chat while you climb with them. Then from there you can ask where they climb outside and see if you can join them sometime.

All i can say is read read read. There are alot of good instructional books out there the more you know the better climber you will be and from there a safer climber therefor more likely to find partners. That's my two cents.

If you really want some help.... stop calling climbing a hobby. It is a passion or way of life. Stamp collecting is a hobby.

My g/f and I are taking a climbing class with Cypress College at Rock City. We're there on Wed. nights 7-whenever. We're new to the sport, but want to get pretty good at it. Anyway... Rock City is an awesome gym... really chill and good people. I bet if you boulder there, you'll meet some people.

If you have the resources to do so, this spring you should consider taking some lessons at the Yosemite Climbing School.

having a well-rounded life has its virtues, but climbing is one of those activities where bad things can happen to you if you don't take it all that seriously, where a commitment to knowing what you're doing matters, a lot. climb enough and you'll come across good partners who can be very good friends too, who actually care whether you live or die, and others who can be so nonchalant that the whole climbing thing seems no different than going shopping at the mall or a day at the carnival. supposedly you're able to trust your life to your partners. i like my life, and like being alive. so yeah, to the latter kind, no thanks. and in a way, glad that i find out sooner than later hope you find good partners to climb with. lots of good climbing here in SoCal

So far they are pretty good... The classes at Fullerton are taught by our teacher's son. They are both really experienced climbers, and have a lot of good technical knowledge. The class is worth if for the discounted rate at Rock City, if nothing else.
