I was recently at a gym where they played a classic rock radio station, with.......commercials!!!!!

All I have to say is that this is F'd up. How freakin' hard is it to get all the employee's together and make a nice playlist or at least buy a cd player?

If you play music in public, you're supposed to pay royalties. Maybe they know this, or maybe they're just lazy.

my campus radio station plays all kinds of music, and they only require a CD to do it. They pay no royalties.

Every dentist and doctor office you go to has a music radio station on. I doubt they pay royalties.

I'm not sure if that makes it legal or just common. That being said, you get better music by buying a business license to satellite radio.

Classic rock is neither. You gym must be owned by some really old dudes.

I worked at a place where they played classic rock all day. I scarred me for life, no joke. The entire playlist could fit on a 512mb mp3 player. It actually effected my climbing to hear that sheet.

Yah, but they are all supposed to pay... oh well, maybe that explains all the crappy music out there...

royalties are only due if you are using the music to profit in some way. ie radio, commercial, etc.

You know or you guess...? In the great north, if you play music in a place of business you cough up to SOCAN who in turn pay out royalties to artists... I always assumed ASCAP was the same for the US. Just cause most dentists don't pay doesn't mean its right...

Oh and btw, REO Speedwagon kicks Serge Tankian's nOOb butt!

it is the same. I just paid our ASCAP license fees. The US has a whole complicated royalty structure depending on the industry. Businesses charging admission get hit the hardest. Climbing gyms are classified as "indoor playgrounds" same as a skating rink or bowling alley. The royalty is based on how much the "admission" is and square footage. The source of the music is competely irrelevant. You pay it whether you play the radio, CD's or streaming audio off a PC.

Over in Spain, the SGAE (or SSgae as they are getting to be known as) have fined bus companies for playing music in school buses, have waited until a wedding has ended to demand royalties plus fines for music played, is trying to put extra tax on blank CD's because they might be used to copy music..

Basically, you'll find that if you leave it to them you'll have to pay royalties to hum a tune..

Satellite is key. I can understand being aggravated by commercials. Keep this in mind though-

With a CD Player: Who decides what CD are played? How long are these CDs played until switched out?
How much time is wasted around the CD Player when you could be climbing?

No matter who has what playlist, some wont be unhappy with the music.

Shut up and climb or bring your own fucking Ipod with your own playlist to the Gym.
