Jake Just about everyone topropes Trashcan - it's much safer than leading it. Take all the practice you want. The first pitch of Gamesmanship is perfect for learning - regular edges allow low commitment jamming - two hand moves, no foot jams, regular face rest, recover, repeat. Then you would have really enjoyed the double cracks. Since you missed it, you need to visit Ragged sometime and learn. Boulder up a thing called Slingshot - steep, and right off the ground.

I have a somewhat unorthodox partner request. For the past year and a half, I’ve lived in the Bermuda Triangle of MA climbing gyms and have been going NUTS! It takes me a solid 45 minutes to drive to the nearest gym…at 3 in the morning, without traffic. After work is near impossible. I’ve been considering opening up some kind of co-op place (my brother’s got a sweet set up in Cali where some guy rented out a storage unit and built his own wall and lets friends use it) or even a full-fledged gym, I don’t know. Thing is, I’m not a business major and frankly, I don’t want to learn to be a business major. I just want to climb. So what I’m thinking is that there’s a TON of available commercial real estate in Natick and Framingham that’s just begging to be climbed in. I’d be willing to put in whatever effort it took (even volunteer to run the desk after work every night), so long as the title “manager” or “owner” doesn’t apply. “Grunt with benefits of unlimited free membership” is perfect. It’s a huge project and would cost a lot of capital to start up…I’d be willing to take out a loan to put into starting the place up as well, or at least co-signing, whatever the legally sound method is. Obviously I haven’t put a whole ton of thought into this (it’s not fun to get your own hopes up then crush them in a moment of legal rationality) but the basics are there. I just need a partner (or a few) in crime…I mean business. Business, definitely. Any takers?

Hey Texas, I'm certainly not in a financial position to back anything like this, but one of the local gyms has been looking into expanding into that area for about 2 years now (specifically natick and framingham). It might be worth talking to them, as they would have the experience and know-how to get something like this done. As you mention, it is a huge undertaking, but they are in the business and want to set up shop in that area to capture the business of folks like you. PM me and I'll see about getting you to talk with folks there.

Just to give you a reference - to open a public commercial gym in that area - whether it's MR West or independent - means you are going to need to secure something in the low 7 figures to even start. you are going to very quickly going to need to acquire a lot of business knowledge. To start a private co-op you could do with 1/100 of the investment. Find 10 committed friends and put up a grand each.

Whuz Crackin' homez? just checked weathar.cawm, adn it listed 40 adn partly cloudy for sat 3/1...I am encouraged, and am planning on showup in the quarries P-lot around 8 am. should have me a little bit o' ice gear with me too... Tex, that's an idea tha wideguy and I had talked over a couple years ago, but eric's comments abiove were similar to our own conclusions... a huge hindrance. thoughnI like the 10-committed-friends - CO-OP idea.

I'm seeing mostly cloudy with a high around 40 and a 50% chance of snow showers on Saturday. Sunday looks like all sun, though. But it's only Weds, let's keep an eye to see how things change. Just checking, though, is Sunday better for anyone? GO

I think that it would depend on how much snow they are predicting for sat. I'd be up for either day.

If no-one else shows, I'll just feast on donuts and rope-solo. At any rate - anyone who decides to go on Sunday is guaranteed a partner, 'cause I'll be there. GO PS - next weekend is a maybe for me - I have a number of plans in the works, though none are guaranteed yet.

yeah well, I put out a tentative feeler and sunday looks like a no-go for me. Shane and I will be up in the attic saturday. I now have enough gear to potentially climb ice. one of my CAMP Alpaxs ice tools (the pick/hammer, the pick/adze is due monday) showed up yesterday, and my AustriAlpin crampons arrived today along with an SMC Himalayan Mountaineering Axe I'd won on Ebay a week and a half ago. I wonder if there's any ice in purgatory chasm? ;-) of course, I mounted the crampons to my day hikers as soon as I had them out of the box. doubt that'd work, but damn they looked knarly ;-)

Up here north of the city (Somerville) the snow's just about gone, and I would bet that Quincy has even less. So tomorrow should be beautiful! I'll plan to get there around 10 to give it a chance to warm up a little. Jason, I picked up a tarp, so if there's any snow, we can use that. Should we plan to meet up at the right side of the prow in the morning, while there's still sun on it? GO

where'd ya get the tools rob? Any reason you didn't get a matching set? The red one tends to me more of an alpine style and the darker one is more of actual ice climbing style. If it were me i'd have 2 of the dark one that can still be used for alpine stuff but will swing much better into ice. ask Edgy tho.. he knows that crap kate and I went to RIRG tonight and pushed pretty hard.. i was hurting and sometimes falling off .8's at the end.
