So we got a few mastercams in the shop, and I am in love. I withheld judgement until I held them in my hands, but I can now say, mommy likes. We only got in sized 4-6 though. I'm going to get a bunch (no doubles) and I think on my budget I can get four or five, MAAYBE 6 of them. I'm thinking of not getting 5 and 6, because their range seems not far off from a .5 - .75 C4 which I have doubles of. I'm also thinking of passing on the 00 as just beig too small for my needs right now, my needs being crack climbs to about 5.10 and a general good rack for squamish come august. So that leaves me getting the 0,1,2,3, and 4. Which I can buy and still have pennies left over for ramen. I think between that and my double rack of c4's I should be good (of course a smathering of nuts, as well.) Thoughts? Criticism?

as long as you've gotten your fill of nuts... and you don't want to climb any offwidths there will be a TON of stuff for you to play on in squamish! what else do you have in the range of small cams? (besides your doubles of .5 and .75)

Also, the #4 master cam falls entirely within the range of the purple C4, so you might want to rethink that if you've already got doubles...

I hae doubles down to .5, and a single .4 and .3. I love nuts, yes, but sometimes its nice to plug in a cam in a real thrutch. i guess my real question was on th 00 and 0 mastercam, i know the smaller C3's say their only for aiding, but i couldn't find any similar info for the m-cams. I'm trying to NOT buy the whole set. I'm pretty confident about not getting the 5 and 6, but because I haven't seen the smaller ones (but want to order ASAP) I want to know what people thnk! hah, and no OW's, thanks....but maybe ;)

I'd still like to play with them, but i'm probably going to go the route of the master cams.

The only metolius cams I like are the TCU's. Maybe it's my fat-ass knuckles, but could somebody please explain to me why you like metolius cams. I hate the triggers. I am tempted to say it's a range issue, but I love the technical friends. Now that they have a new stem and new triggers I thought I would give-em a chance. I touched, I fondled, I groped, I even gave them a reach-around. Alas, I don't like those cams. The only metolius cams I dig are the TCU's. Please, explain why you like them. Is it cuz they are sexy? Is it cuz they are floppy now? Is it cuz they.......do the dishes?

People like the cams they're used to. They all work and have pros/cons. I think the most useful Master Cams and 1,2, and 3. I have those in TCU's which have exactly the same range. I don't like the .3 and .4 C4's and they fill in the finger sized gap. The 0 and smaller are too hard to place to be useful free climbing in Squamish since nuts usually fit more easily in that size. Three lobed cams fit really nicely in some pod placements but the Master Cams will be better generalists I think.

I'm pretty sure they are the same size as the TCU and the power cam so :00 is 8.5----14 mm 0 is 10-----15.5 mm I still don't like those cams. The design is good. The floppy is neat for slapping my belayer with. They just don't really inspire confidence in me.

The numbers are out there... I was comparing on the MEC website which has the ranges for the cams they sell. In Squamish the blue TCU fits pretty nicely into a lot of the old pin scars. Finger tips size. I've placed my friend's C3's a few times but mostly out of the novelty of having such a small cam on my rack. They're tricky to place. The yellow TCU gets placed A LOT. It's my finger lock size. If you're coming to Squamish don't forget your Pink Tricam

It's what I bought, I might get the 4 now as well. On the rock, the compare very favorably to Aliens, IMO, very!

skip the double zero and get the 5 or 6. i'd say, and then take your friend and your friends rack to utah on the way back.

My order form reads 1 2 3 4 right now. It's about all I can reponsibly afford, and if i MUST HAVE a certain size I can always order again, I guess. I'll be reporting back soon as I get my next paycheck!

interestingly, the #5 is between the .75 and #1 C4, and the #6 is pretty much the same as the #1 C4. if i were going to buy them based on size alone- i'd probably skip the #4 (red) and get the #5 instead. the #4 is really close to the .75, but not quite as big....but not really in between the .5 and .75, either..... also, the #3 (orange), is super close to the .5 C4- just fyi. all of that said, this comment in no way reflects any opinion i have of the cams- i'm reserving that for the review (which i hope to have up by monday next week!)

I would agree. It depends on whether you want doubles of .5 and .75 (or triples rather) Personally, I love .75 and have triples of that size, which is one reason why I don't need any more gear.

Aliens still go in easier. I don't particularly care for the metolius cam angle. If you're determined to get some though, I would suggest that the only ones you really need are the green, yellow, and red alien equivalents. I think that they're blue, yellow, and orange.

carabiner96 wrote: Any word on how small the 0 or 00 actually are? There the same size and strengths as the rest of the Mets. http://www.metoliusclimbing.com/master_cam.htm edited to add: If more positive posts keep coming in from actual users of them, I'm planing on getting the 1-4. I've got the 00 and 0 TCU's for aiding and might end up getting the MC's in these sizes later. In the 5 and up sizes, narrow heads aren't a big necessity around here . I've got single stem Trangos in that size and up to the 8, not to mention the power cams too.

Not sure what boadman means, but I've found that, for the same size cams, aliens do tend to slide into the crack easier/faster (still, I don't own aliens). This is just an empirical observation. My only theory is that the floppy stem is what helps...
