Hey all. Many Gunks climbers have probably seen the add up at the Trapps for the bouldering clean-up this weekend. This post is a reminder for the event and a brief rundown. The cleanup will happen rain or shine.
The American Alpine Club is feeding us breakfast and coffee at the steel bridge; meet here at 9:30 Saturday morning (July 26). From there, we will take on the carriage road, armed with brushes and 'indian tanks' (the Preserve is providing these cleaning supplies) to spray down (nylon & water only) and clean up chalk stained boulders and anything else we can reach. We'll be picking up trash as we go. Following, Rock and Snow/Mohonk Preserve/American Alpine Club will be throwing a BBQ Saturday evening for participants.
Quality, free camping will also be available to those who participate. More information on the camping will be forthcoming at the cleanup. On Sunday, folks will have the option of doing trail work with Dick Williams.
Many Gunks climbers seem to have a mentality that the rangers clean up after them, in one way or another, or harbor the idea that a degree of irresponsibility is merited since they pay a use fee. I would like to use this event to foster a greater sense of responsibility and stewardship in the users of Preserve land.
