so these are my options
Yuba city Ca about 40 miles north of Sacramento
Fairfield Ca in between Sac and San Fran
SLC Utah
Alamagordo
This is a list of different places i have available to go to with my job. I was wondering if anyone could tell me which would be the best as far as closeness to good boulders

No contest..., SLC is the one. Good rock within 30 minutes. Great rock within 2 hours. Perfect skiing within an hour. Housing is reasonable, the community is cool and the pollution only shuts the city down occasionally. If you can find a place on the east side, up on the benches, you'll be above the pollution most of the time with the added benefit that you'll be closer to LCC and skiing.

If you live for walls, choose Fairfield because it's the closest to Yosemite.

Four hours is a ridiculous length of time to regularly drive for a weekend of climbing. A lot of people do it but that doesn't change the fact that it's ridiculous. Especially if you have the option of living in SLC.

Let us know what you decide.

Alamogordo, as it happens, is right up against the base of some beautiful mountains. Unfortunately I can't tell you much about the bouldering there. I know of a little bit of sport climbing right there, and the Organ Mountains aren't too far west near Las Cruces. Hueco Tanks is about 2 hours or so south of Alamogordo. In the summer it's just balls hot in that area. If I lived there I'd live up in Cloudcroft if I could afford it. It's a beautiful little town up in the hills. I did once drive past a small ski area up there but I don't know if it's open anymore. Ski Apache is not too far north at Ruidoso. New Mexico is a strange state, I'd go visit it before I committed to living there.

Barstow? I thought Barstow was that little shit hole in the middle of the desert not too far from the bigger shit hole of Fort Irwin.

Alamagordo!

Great sport climbing winter & summer, hueco 1 hour south, epic trad in the organ mtns of las cruces (my home town).

PLUS
For the rest of your life, EVERY town you live in will be better than alamagordo. You can only go up. No offense meant to current alamagordo residents.

Barstow wasn't on the list.

And as far as heat is concerned I don't really mind it. Over the past few years i have lived in Kuwait, Qatar, UAE and Japan all places where it's hot as balls and humid as hell. You just learn to drink lots of water eat salty food and bring extra chalk.

oh i forgot to mention south Korea as well(amazing climbing in that country, every type of rock and every facet of climbing).

from a climbers perspective yes those were not the best places in the world to live but from a cultural aspect i found them quit stimulating.

Back to the topic at hand. I really love bouldering the most and aside from that really enjoy long low grade multi-pitch trad climbing. It sounds like NM is the place to go for that unless there are some more thoughts about cali out there

North Cali...is the better half of the state. Fairfield your only a hour to the shore, 1 1/2hr to Castle Rock SP(nice rock), 4 hrs to Tahoe, 4 hrs to Yosemite, 6 hrs to Bishop (Bouldering Mecca), and 45 min. to Berkley climbing supplies stores and re-solers. Plus you can ski in the winter time at Tahoe or Yosemite. Oh yeah 1 hr from SF, so you enjoy those great resturants. Half Moon Bay and North Shore-good surf. 1 1/2 to Pebbles Beach if you are into golf, of course the green fees are a bit much. Kilroy, garlic capital of the world, is on the way to Yosemite. Sequoias? Redwoods? Wildlife? North Cali. and the Eastern Sierras are the places to be if I was not stuck in Texas.

OK let's talk quality of life.

Both Fairfield and Yuba City have more in common with one another than they do the other cities on your list.

For starters, they aren't cities at all; they're towns. Fairfield is best known for TRavis Air Force Base, a major air-supply base. As with all 'military towns' there is a, hmmm, unsavory element of lowlifes preying upon the young men stationed there.

Biut Fairfield itself is a bedroom community for the north San Fran bay area. Its sits on the edge of the Great Central Valley and the San Fran delta. As a result it is foggy in winter and quite hot in summer. And other than some coast range hills it is quite flat.

HOWEVER, Fairfield has decent bouldering VERY CLOSE on volcanic rocks sprinkled on a low ridge, in Vacaville.

Yuba City is also in the valley, only more so; hotter in summer, more foggy in winter. There is NO ROCK WHATSOEVER close to Yuba City other than Sutter Buttes with is patrolled private property. (there would be excellent sport climbing there otherwise)

The next closest venues to Yuba City are an hour away and the famous Northern California venues start at +2 hours away.

As an aside I live an hour south of Yuba City, 45 minutes east of Fairfield; Sacramento region.

If I were facing a similar decision?

I dunno dude. I would NOT raise my daughters in Utah and that is a fact. I'm sorry if that offends those with Utah sensibilities but I would not do that unless I could find no work in the other 49 states. It is the last place in the US I would raise my daughters.

Twere it me I would visit almagordo, having spent some time in Albequerque (I can't spell it) and Sante Fe I like N Mexico and the deserts there a lot. But its a place of limited professional opportunity; unlike Fairfield or SLC.

Oh, both Fairfield and Yuba City have been positively HAMMERED by the housing collapse. If you have some money and finance behind you? You can find some KILLER deals in either place. Lots of upside potential for someone who is staying for a while.

I think all of those places have an air force base associated with them. As well as all of the places he's mentioned he's lived previously.

Well, the Organs look rad, at least if I am to trust this TR currently on the SP front page:

http://www.summitpost.org/...-the-Whole-Loaf.html

SLC would be my first choice if climbing were the only criterion. But I would not be keen about living full-time in Utah, especially if I had kids to raise.

If you're not Mormon, I'd do yr due diligence with other Gentiles in yr age group about the benefits and downsides to life in the greater SLC area. I have friends who deal perfectly well, and others who are truly, genuinely miserable, despite the gorgeous setting.

SLC itself is actually fairly cosmopolitan these days and ,in fact, votes Democratic. Of course, as soon as you reach the suburbs, it's back to Mormonville.

The folks I've known who had problems living there were (mostly) dealing with the issues of raising kids. I haven't been in SLC in almost five years? Six? You would have the skiing . . . .
