Construction complete!!!

Can't Post

I have two projects going on right now at home and figured I'd share some photos of their progress...

First project, for the kids, is building a HUGE playset/fort:

For scale, that's me in the big hat, on the other side of a short fence in our vegetable garden.

It's gonna be 2 levels, 12' X 16', with half in the backyard and half in the vege garden, with playhouse/fort, different levels of decks, ladders, a slide, and a large cantilevered arm for swings. No plans other than the changing ones in my head.

Next project, for the parents Cool, is a bouldering room:

This was considered unfinished "attic space" accessible through a half door shown in the bottom picture... The room itself is about 12' X 18', with two windows, and vaulted ceilings... I'm having a friend run AC, insulate, and finish the room to be "livable space", then I'm going to build supports for faceted textured walls, for a dedicated bouldering room for the wife and I, as the closet gym is 45 minutes away, and the closest rock is over 4 hours.

We already bought all the holds (300) and wardware.

Those are my current projects... More picrures to come. Smile

whoa, looks like that attic space was MADE to be a bouldering cave! I'm psyched to see updates on it.

Karen is psyched too, and asks every day, "is it done yet?"

More pictures...

Progress on the playset/fort:

Progress on the bouldering cave, which first has to become a finished room with AC:

As to this:

As I'd said, it's accessed through a small door that was shown in one of the pictures, so it's not like a normal "attic", but is considered "attic space" since it WAS connected to the attic.

Here's another picture from the outside showing the door at a landing on the stairs to the 2nd floor of the house:

I got rained out one day this weekend, which meant no work on ther playset... So I gave my youngest, Sage (3 years), an umbrella, and we played in the rain in our jammies... He had a blast!

Do you have to finish it with sheetrock prior to plywood? What about bolts that extend beyond the ply?

Yes... Otherwise it wouldn't be a finished space sealed from the attic, and I'd waste a LOT of energy through the AC / Heat.

There will be no plywood in contact with the sheet rock, as I'll need to frame in all the supports for the faceted, textured, 3/4" plywood that will be predrilled on a 6" grid and fitted with T-nuts. With all those holes, I would lose a lot of AC through them. There wili be at least 1 1/2" between the sheet rock and the climbing wall at it closest. The bolts for the holds are made for a 3/4" thick wall.

Hmm.

On my wall, I just eliminated the plastic vapor barrier and screwed the ply directly to the framing. The insulation limits any heat transfer, and accepts any screws that stick out the back side.

Over time and usage, I believe that it will be a major PITA to locate the exact bolt for every given hold. Then again, it should be no problem to twist them through the drywall as long as you are between framing members.

It'll make more sense when the room is finished, and you can see the framing going in for the climbing walls after that, as well as the finished product.

Yeah, don't listen to me, I am just jealous!

My home wall was not steep enough for training, as I was unwilling to take away room from my workshop.

It was a big hit for birthday parties, however.

Looks GREAT bro!

Really, I wish I had more room for less than to vertical, as almost all of it will be severely overhung. Plus, I can't get over 8' in height... I'm jealous of your's. A lot of the framing will be to achieve some less overhung stuff, and there will be a lot of room behind those areas made into storage so as not to waste it... Thus some of the wall will be a hindged door to access the space behind it. Prolly store holds and stuff in there.

Between the pool and the kids having the entire 2nd floor for themselves, there are lots of kids over anyways. Both Karen and I like kids, and we're pretty good with em.

For Justice's 5th birthday we had a Pirate Party...
I made a big treasure map out of poster board, drew a big happy face on the other side, then cut it up into 30 pieces... I then made 30 smaller treasure maps that lead to the boy's treasure bags (15), and girl's treasure bags (15). Each bag had pirate nick-nacks, and more importantly, a piece of the bigger map.

Karen and her family, made and manned 5 pirate related activities stations similar to Survivor Challenges but for kids, when they completed each task, they got a gold coin. 5 coins got them the small map to go find their treasure bag.

When all kids had gotten their bags, my sister-in-law helped the kids put the big "smilely face" together, turned it over for the map which lead them in a big group to the Treasure Box pinata outside that they all hit with a stick until the treasure came out.

Karen bought an inflatable pool and filled it with hollow plastic balls, for a ball pit. Hundreds of balls ended up all over the house. (more on that below)

29 kids from 3-6, and not one meltdown, and all had fun!

I was even the big dork, as I sat at the end of a hall with 2 bedrooms on each side, and when the kids would come with their map, I would say all pirate like, "Arrrr... Do ye got yer map?", then whether it was a boy or a girl, "Arrrr.... Ye want the laddie's/lassie's treasure, it's in thar!"

It ended with Justice & about 20 remaining kids opening his presents in our media room, which has a large rear screen projector and sliver screen... Peter Pan was playing. One kid started throwing balls at me, then 2, then 6, then all of them. I was being pelted!

All was good until one ball hit one of my acoustic guitars that hangs from the wall to keep out of reach of the kids, and it made a loud chime. Then all the kids atarted pelting my guitars!

Needless to say, that was the end of the balls. Shocked

Almost done! Took a week off over the 4th of July weekend in order to finish the bouldering cave, and pretty much have it all done except for the foam floor, and minor finishing work...

Hopefully, in the next few weekends I can finish the room and actually start putting up problems... I had to order more T-Nuts, as I though 800 would be enough, but I came up short, so a few boards aren't yet screwed in.

The flooring will be 2 layers, equalling about 1", of "jig-saw foam" under all climbing area, and a black and white vinyl stick down tile for the non-climbing area. A crashpad and two toddler bed mattresses will complete the floor.
