So we are heading out to the New River Gorge in a week and I will probably make a trip down there again this summer. Anyway I wanted to know where I could jump on some deep water solo routes, are there any around Orange Oswald area?
I don't plan on renting a boat or spending more than a few hours in the water (that is if its not unbearably cold), any beta would be appreciated.

The deep-water soloing at NRG is at Whippoorwill. You can look directions up on the guidebook. Take your wetsuit or prepare to have your nuts served frozen!

You can DWS at Pirate's cove, which uses the same approach as Orange Oswald.
From what I can remember, the lake level in April isn't quite high enough for soloing:

It would also be really, really cold... but it's a lot of fun in the summer, especially just to fool around and relax at the end of the afternoon.

Not sure what level the lake is at now, but it was way down last week at this time. DWS is for the summer.

Hey folks, I am planning on headiing down to Summersville for DWS and some roped climbing. I've been reading that summer is the best time, but we will be there May 18-21. Is that too early for swimming/DWS?

Go in the summer and rent a pontoon boat. Then it's park the boat and climb. Much better !

They outlawed DWS the year i started going down there. have been climbing out of boats for three years now and have had 0 problems. the patrol boats are brown and even when they rode up on us with a climber w/ shoes and chalk hanging out the front of the canoe they just asked us if we were climbing to which we said no and told us to have a good day. Just dont be the person that falls and gets hurt. even small driftwood hurts real bad from up high, clear your landings and have a boat/floating thing close in case youre super tired. dont jump in a life vest as it can jack you in the face. ENJOY!!!

Heard a rumor that the fine for getting caught jumping in the lake is something ridiculous like $5,000. Can anyone confirm?

I know some people that have been DWS'ing lately and they haven't, yet, been fined. THey were mostly doing this at the Whippoorwill..
Not sure on fine amount as no one I know has ever been fined.

I heard from a buddy that the coast guard recognizes the difference between DWS and cliff jumping and that it's cool to DWS now. This is purely rumor though. He didn't have anything to back it up.

This is definitely NOT TRUE.
While it has not been widespread, I ran into two climbers who were ticketed and fined about a week prior to the 4th.

I was down there this past weekend and talked to some gentlemen patrolling the lake around whippoorwill. They let us off with a warning (some girl climbing in the area did jump off) and informed us of the rules. Jumping off anything above 6' is considered cliff jumping. Climbing IS permitted. Climbing and falling is permitted. If you turn around and jump towards the water, it's cliff jumping. They recommend you downclimb. "If you're climbing and it's too hard, and you can't keep going... Face the wall, and push off like this (mimes motion)." That's how they explained it. They do patrol the waters and we saw them watching us with binoculars. They really just want to keep dumb people from jumping. And there are some dumb people. Last summer, we watched a guy try and do a front flip off a 10m ledge into pirates cove, and land on his face. He passed out almost drown. My girlfriend and i saved him while his friends sat on the rocks laughing and drinking beer. So basically... act like a rock climber and not like you're their just to jump into the water.

I didn't think to ask, but they certainly seemed a bit stressed by it.
When I think about it more however, it seems like they would have piped up with that info right away. Curious.

Good point. It's not likely that the fine for a first infraction is more than a few hundred. I hope thats the case anyway, the rule is ridiculous enough without unreasonable fines to go along with it.
