Well, you should expect to go up. That is essentially climbing.

A lot of people here will start screaming at you to "read the FAQ". I didn't have time to do all that when I started climbing. I'm an outdoorsy person, not a reader. My biggest piece of advice - when you start climbing you'll probably be starting in tennis shoes. Those don't give you as good control on the rock as you should have. Save up a little bit of money as soon as you can and switch to cowboy boots with the pointy toes. My climbing improved noticeably once I got my first pair of Tony Lama snakeskins.

This really depends on what you are going to be climbing, but as was already suggested, going up whatever it is that you will be climbing is usually the best way to start.

If you don't know anyone that climbs, then find a climbing gym in your area and pay for an intro class.

Also what should i expect my first time climbing I'd say go somewhere where you can try it yourself at your own pace. forget about $ and equip, there is a lot you can do with what you have(ok no high heels) i started out at a beautiful climbing/bouldering area called Tres Piedras in New Mexico and that hooked me hard core. but i'm a very solitary person, so i just went. since then i've moved and am going to a gym. it's harder to get into the zen and beauty of the plastic rock, but being hooked means i'm willing to traverse there until i can figure out where the heck i can go in southern washington!

Are we talking of a big plastic rock or is this the same as wall climbing?
