i am in the market for a good camera to take to the crags. i would like for it to have video and still shot capabilities. any suggestions and where to find would be most helpful. thanks.

i apologize for the lack of details. i will use it to film routes/cool approaches. take group photos and gear photos. general scenery pictures. it doesn't have to be HD. just enough to capture the surroundings.

thanks for all your input. already been a great help in locating some deals.

I been repairing plenty of Minolta( now owned by sony )but for low cost budget, the Minolta A200 comes with MPEG and 8 mp. Got one off ebay for $90 used.

if you want newer then canon or nikon DSLR offer mpeg HQ video.

You need to give us more information about intended use, bulk and budget.

I personally use the Nikon D90 and am very happy with it (see http://www.mountaingazette.com/...hy_in_the_mountains/).

specific cameras?
Can only suggest the one that i have:
sony cybershot DSC W 15. Great little camera! Full aluminum body and (at least mine) quite robust. Have dropped it out of a bus, had it in my chest pocket in offwidths, used it ice climbing, used it ice caving, filmed with it at -30°, had it with me at rock festivals and so on.
It has a lot of dents and scratches, and sometimes you have to pull out the lens by hand and hit it on a hard surface to focus (especially when its cold or wet) but apart from that its fine.
And the best: You can use AA batteries and it has a viewfinder!
Those two things are what i would look for in a new camera.
AA batteries because you can get them recharchable at high capacites at great prices, and you probably already have them for your headlamp, and a viewfinder because this allows you to switch of the display (good for longer battery life) nad it allows you to actually take photos when its really dark or bright (night, or snow, for example).

ive got a fujifilm S9500 DSLR its 10 megapixel and records to an XD card which are cheap enough.
It takes quality photos and decent mpegs but downsides are large size and it runs on 4 AA batteries.
For all intensive purposes you can get some real good cameras waterproof and all in a compact size which may be better, you can just throw them in a pocket and your away

Agreed. What you intend to do with the camera makes a big difference. Some people are suggesting DSLRs, and others are suggesting P&S (point and shoot). It really depends on what you want from your camera.

Personally, i carry a small P&S. I have a Panasonic DMC-FS3. It's 8.1 MP, which is plenty for me. It's compact, has a metal casing, and is relatively cheap. That's what makes a good climbing camera for me, as I'm using it for personal documentation. It also shoots pretty good video, which was one of your requirements.

With a DSLR, you're going to get much better images and flexibility. That comes with a larger price, and larger cameras. With a P&S, you're generally getting a more compact, easy to use camera at a smaller cost. You're giving up quality. For a casual photographer, either (or both) can be a good option.

i just want one to take some video. me and my buds are getting into upper 5.10s and 5.11s so the routes are worthy of camera time. as far as budget. cheap as possible but around 200 or 300 USD would be great.

Right now I personally like Panasonic’s offerings. They have excellent still shots and arguably the best HD movie modes. Here are three Panasonic’s I like/own and two Canon’s that are all great cameras for their intended uses.

Panasonic DMC-GF1 $899 Preorder with one lens at amazon.com

http://www.dpreview.com/previews/PanasonicGF1/

DMC-GF1 Picture and movie Samples

http://www.dpreview.com/...asonicGF1/page14.asp

Amazon Pre-order listing.
http://www.amazon.com/...ref=ox_ya_oh_product

This is an awesome entry level micro 4/3 camera in a compact body. It has incredible 720p HD video and a pop up flash. However, it is uses interchangeable lenses so it can get very expensive very quickly. However, if you want DSLR quality in a compact body this will be a great option. It will be available through amazon at the end of this month.

Panasonic DMC-LX3 $400-$600 if you can still find one.

This is an incredible little compact camera that takes awesome stills and great HD video. However, it is extremely hard to find for a reasonable price and it has a very limited 2.5x zoom.

http://www.amazon.com/...252594772&sr=1-1

Panasonic DMC-FZ35 $376 at amazon.com

Great 18x optical zoom camera with HD video and full manual controls. I played with this camera this morning. It is a really great camera if you need 18x zoom.

http://www.dpreview.com/...09072704panafz38.asp

http://www.amazon.com/...252594881&sr=1-1

Panasonic DMC-TS1 $330 at amazon.com
This little camera has HD video, is water proof, and shock proof. It is an awesome deal for only $330.

http://www.dpreview.com/...2705panasonicft1.asp

http://www.amazon.com/...252595035&sr=1-1

Canon G11 $500 at amazon later this month
This camera should take excellent still photos. However, it only takes 640x480 video which rules it out in my book.

http://www.dpreview.com/...09081908canong11.asp

http://www.amazon.com/...252595190&sr=1-1

Canon S90is $430 at Best Buy later this month.

This camera is similar to the Panasonic DMC-LX3 but it has a slightly longer zoom and it only takes 640x480 video.
