I don't know if I would get excited or not about climbing in the Olympics, but I do think you're right that there's little evidence it would cause a surge of interest. That's the standard way this discussion is usually framed, except no one ever went to the trouble of proving the popularity boost.

Who sits down to make an internet petition thinking it will ever accomplish anything? Were you planning to e-mail the link to the IOC and then laugh as they had no choice but to acquiesce?

Does pablicity have anything to do with getting more Pabst? If it does, I fully support climbing getting more pablicity.

jcoop wrote: qtm wrote: After snowboarding debuted in the Olympics, there was a 21% increase in the number of riders on the slopes. Subsequent years had lower growth, but growth nonetheless. Could be a coincidence, but 21% is a huge number. I think there can be some correlations between climbing and snowboarding. Of course, I'd like to see a link to those numbers, and wonder how many of those snowboarders switched from skiing to boarding. Snowboarding was also already growing HUGELY before it became an Olympic sport (1998). I'd like to know the growth of snowboarders in 1997 and see how it compares to 1998. I was off the mountain for a few years due to an injury, so I don't know how much it grew year to year. But when I got back in 2001 there were terrain parks and half-pipes that weren't there before. Yes, it could well have been the general growth, I can't find the numbers to say it wasn't. But I was reading an industry report that seemed to be written for retailers, to expect a similar growth after the SLC games. I think that snowboarding has a few things that other sports, mentioned by mattm, don't. For one, there's a huge subculture surrounding it, which many kids think of as 'cool', as opposed to say badminton (which I find fascinating, but you never see it on TV). There are stores in the mall dedicated to this skate punk group, and it's more attractive to kids. I think that's similar to bouldering and thus would increase participation. Another thing about snowboarding is that it's more accessible than other sports. I doubt there are many badminton leagues around the country. If you want your kid to do track and field, they have to try out for a school team. I'm an archer (and a traditional bowyer) but I don't meet too many others (aside from bowhunters). I used to compete small-bore rifle, but training facilities are limited. White water kayaking... flatwater is easy, but white water takes a lot more planning and commitment. Snowboarding is easy by comparison (well, assuming you live where it's a short drive to a ski resort). And I think climbing gyms would offer the same ease of access. I think that if bouldering were an olympic sport, it would increase the number of people at gyms, and that would translate to more people at bouldering areas. But climbing... not sure toprope climbing would have the same appeal nor draw the same crowds. Unless as I said earlier, you had Gladiators trying to rip you off the wall...

I'm not sure what I think about climbing becoming an olympic sport, but I do know that it would increase the popularity of climbing right after the Olympics. I did gymnastics all growing up and through college and every 4 years the gyms would always get a huge surge in people coming in to want to learn gymnastics right after the summer olympics. However it would usually go back to the somewhat normal levels after about 6 months to a year. So my guess would be that if climbing became an olympic sport it would make your local gym a lot more crowded more than your local crag. Of course there would be those that would take to climbing outside too, but all in all I don't think it would be a very noticeable difference. I do think that it would increase the various climbing gear companies revenue though, which in turn may be a benefit to all of us. Who knows really knows though?
