I heard at the gym that an 8 bolt hunk of granite broke off of "redrum" ln the last week sometime. I haven't had a chance to go check it out yet, does anybody know anything more?

I will inquire today, but I have heard nothing as well. I do know many people that have had massive chunks fall down almost killing them while at the quarry though.

I guess they should've used more bolts to hold it on.

For what it's worth, the guy who told me about the rock fall also told me that it happened at night, and that nobody got hurt. I've got my fingers crossed...

WOW. I was just there last week and thinking of going there tomorrow. But after hearing these yikes. There are a lot of loose rocks there, especially after it rains

I remember that block well if it is actually what used to be redrum. There was another 10d route to the climbers left of redrum that was part of the same block and I recall it being VERY loose but never realized it was that large. Thank god no one was on that route when it came down.

This rock "fall" was intentionally done. That section of detached rock has been progressively shifting over the last few months. I and others had become aware of this and steps were taken to remove the rock at a time when no one was around.
The quarry as a whole is a work in progress and as loose rock is discovered it is either reinforced or removed. Sometimes (as in this case) routes are lost as a result. Rest assured that we will be cleaning and bolting the newly exposed rock, so there will be new routes on much more solid rock as a result

Grooverider, Redrum, and Sweetest Thing were all majorly affected.
They will be re-established though and I truly believe they will be much better routes (not to mention safer and on more solid rock).

Wow.
Its good that safety is being maintained - thanks Louie & others for taking care of that. On the other hand, I'll miss the routes. Was hoping some day to be strong enough to redpoint Sweetest Thing - guess thats it. What was it that Sun Tzu said about "wait by the river long enough, and your enemie's head will float by"?
Maybe we could have a help-cleanup day - get a bunch of us out there to clean up the fallen rock, do bench repair, etc?
