So i recently got me a new helmet, and while i was browsing the manual that came with it, i stumbled upon the remark that stickers, labels and markers may contain ingredients that will harm the helmet. So i already knew that you should not put paint, stickers, whatevers on your climbing gear and so on ..., but this may part is interesting to me. So that means that some stickers are safe to use, even by the manufacturers standart. So how do i find out which are safe to use, and which are not? I would guess that stickers generally should be harmless, since they should work by adhesion, or cohesion, and not as most liquid glues by acting as i solvent on the surface (which would be kinda bad for a helmet). Correct? Wrong? that U R gunna die .gif? qwert

As a helmet manufaturer we all share the same problem. We have no control, whatsoever, of what adhesives and/or solvents that sticker manufacturers use with their products. The sticker manufacturers don't have any control over the adhesive that comes on the sticker paper they buy. And so on down the line. Official recommendation? If you sticker your helmet... AMFYOYO. Sorry we can't be more specific. Mal

What the fcuk does "AMFYOYO" mean? And has anyone ever actually put a sticker on their helmet that caused damage to the helmet?

I go for the acid-free stickers that you use in scrapbooking. I figure it must have to be the acid kind to avoid. My helmet, Grivel, came with the same warning, but also included stickers so I could individualized my helmet. Talk about the irony.

Bats wrote: I go for the acid-free stickers that you use in scrapbooking. I figure it must have to be the acid kind to avoid. Not necessarily. Acid-free for scrapbooks is to protect the paper and photographs - quite a bit different than plastics. Pour some acetone or methyl-ethyl-ketone on your helmet (both are non-acids) and tell us what happens.

Sorry we can't be more specific. Mal I already thought about something like this, and i can kinda understand the legal side on this. I understand that you can not tell me what stickers are ok - and i suppose due to the above mentioned reasons you dont know it anyways - but what bad can exactly happen, should i pick some of the bad stickers? Ok, some of the adhesive could diffuse in the plastic of the helmet and weaken it. But on hardshell helmets the plastic is quite thick, so some minor diffusion doesnt seem to be worse than the scratches it gets. And on those styrofoam ones? I guess same, and here the plastic is even thinner, but its not important anyways. The foam is important. And the foam is protected by the plastic, and i doubt that a "normal" sticker would go through the plastic. All stickers i came across so far seemed rather harmless. Not very sticky, dont smell too much, easy to remove and so on. Also empirical proof that most stickers are harmless would be that fact that a big amount of climbing helmets are covered with some - non approved - stickers. But then on the other hand most climbers never need their helmet anyways ... I am just kinda curious how a sticker could damage a helmet. qwert

Uh oh, I drew sharpie art all over my helmet! Should I retire it? Am I on my own? I think just to be safe I won't wear my helmet until I get a new one.

I have had stickers on my helmet, for as long as I have had the helmet which is about 8 years. Helmet has prevented injury once from a direct hit of golf ball sized rock doing terminal velocity with no visible damage to the helmet, except for the tear in the sticker it hit!

Actually they are rhinestones that I found the scapbooking section of the art store. Sorted flashing, but since the adhesive is poor, most of the rhinestones fell off. I also put these metallic butterflies. I guess I will have post a picture, but first I must add more rhinestones.

It would be rather amusing (for all of you folks who read about it afterwards anyways) if the single unicorn sticker on my helmet was the ultimate cause of my demise. Especially since they are such peaceful creatures in their natural environment.

One other issue with stickers is the possibility that one might cover a crack so that you wouldn't notice it. Hard to imagine how a crack could happen without you noticing... TE

Actually, this is a good question, b.c. I'm thinking of painting and/or stickering my helment to make it look less horrible. (It is in an unfortunate color due to sizes they had available when I got it). Of course, I should just buy a new helmet, but it'd be nice to to know what is and isn't OK to put on it. I was wondering, for the obvious reasons, what kinds of spari-paint, if any, is ok.
