I have heard of a couple of spots to camp around Obed and was wondering if anyone had any info. I have heard that there is some camping by a bar next to a pond as well as a local who allows climbers to camp on his property. The few times I have camped there were always in the woods as the ranger said it was ok as long as it was 100 ft off of an established trail. I was looking for something a little more legit. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks

Hey I recently passed through Obed and did some bouldering in the process found out the following: "Camping: Camping is a dicey situation at the Obed. However, a great option is to camp at Del and Marte’s. They have land at the Obed and offer camping to all climbers charging a camping fee of $3/night/person and $2/dog. To get there, take Ridge road towards Lilly Bridge and just past Doc Howard Road (to the left), there is a driveway on the right. Turn onto the driveway and take the immediate left fork. Drive slowly, by the way. This road will lead to the camping. Oh, and keep it down at night, this is Del and Marte’s home so treat it as such." You can get the .pdf of the bouldering guide for Lily and the above reference to the camping at this url: http://www.rockclimbing.com/...rum.cgi?post=2293064 also at this thread http://www.rockclimbing.com/...rum.cgi?post=2119296 they mention a bar one mile outside Wartburg called Edna Mayes that allows camping. Some stuff to check out - I didn't camp so didn't verify any of it.

Camp at Del's. You can walk to half the crags from there. Awesome people.

What do you mean by 'more legit'? You get free camping, a port-a-potty, decent privacy, and you are right near the river to take a swim. What more could you ask for? I always camp at the Overlook Parking area. It isn't a "dicey situation" as far as I can tell. There are signs that clearly say camping is allowed as long as you're more than 200 feet from a trail, overlook, parking, or other established area. It's great camping, I usually don't even put my stuff in a backpack, just grab all of it and wander into the woods. There are no fees, just pack out you're crap and try to only build fires in an existing fire ring (there are plenty). I've always camped near the overlook parking and never had any problems whatsoever. It's about as 'legit' as I've ever seen...

I just went on a trip there and my group stayed at Frozen Head State Park, which is just off the 62. Group sites are ~$25 a night, and there are fire pits, tables, smooth ground for tents, hot showers, running water, etc. Highly recommended if you can split the cost among a few friends.

From what i've read they are very nice and they have several camping plots just off their driveway. I was thinking of stopping here to camp since it's location is so nice but are there any amenities there?

There's a new guidebook written by Kelly Brown for the Obed. http://www.greenergrasspublishing.com/2011/02/18/the-obed-a-climbers-guide-to-the-wild-and-scenic/ He's got tons of info there for ya. And to answer your question, yes, I meant Del and Marty's. He has a campground that he left folks stay on. No real amenities. Bring water and everything you may need. He provides the setting and location, you provide all else.

Frozen head is great (not super close, closes beginning of November I think) Scruggs is great (no amenities) Ralph does let people camp at the bar "Edna Mae's", I've never stayed there but he's a good guy. I run a hostel, 5 minutes from the crag: http://obedhostel.biz -Erik
