Austin, August

So my little sister goes to school down in LA and we have decided to meet her at Lake Travis near Austin for a week long vacation. Third week in August.

They want to climb a bit, and of course so do I. For the family easy top ropes is all that are needed. I don't mind leading to set them up, but I'd prefer fixed anchors so I don't have to fly w/ a lot of gear.

First, is is too hot? Anywhere w/ shade?

Second, is there any place I can rent or borrow a few harnesses?

Third, is there anyone willing to show us around? Obviously we'd buy you beer, dinner, whatever.

Finally, is there anyone that would like to meet ME for a day of climbing... sport up to 5.12 and trad too if you have the gear.

I'm a guide and am just looking for someone with some local knowledge so that I don't waste my families time searching for shade.

As much as I'd love to support the locals more, I can't afford to buy a guide book for just a day or two of climbing.

THANKS!

Depends on your version of "hot". 100+ with 60-80% humidity is common for Austin that time of year. You can find good shade and easier sport stuff for the family at Reimers Ranch. All bolted with good top anchors.

There are a couple of guide services out of Austin that might rent to you. Check out Rock-About and Mountain Madness.

ErockOnline is probably the best place to hook up with Austin climbers.

The only real place for trad climbing is Enchanted Rock (Erock) but it's going to be blazing hot that time of year.

Again, check in with ErockOnline for your best bet.

Good luck.

You're best off deep water soloing at Lake Travis. Best place if you don't have a boat is Pace Bend Park. There are numerous coves and pull outs with cliff lines. If I remember correctly the Bloody Flapper website gives some beta on this. I was out there last month doing some DWS, it was really fun.
