I don't know california well enough to see what areas are close, we'll be spending some time near there with relatives, and I'd love to do some climbing while I'm there.

Up hwy 4 about 30 miles from Arnold is Bear Valley. Good bouldering in the area, some ok cragging, though nothing like Yosemite.

There is no guidebook for the area so online resources or hooking up with a local are your only choices.
For bouldering, Tamarack and Devils Kitchen are roadside. Don't expect Buttermilk, though! Still and all, good boulders on great granite.
For cragging, the Box Canyon slab is good for half pitch easy to moderate - but is subject to guiding parties from the company that kindly provided this URL. Other times you won't see a soul there (most of the time). Its right at the eastern edge of Bear Valley, easy enough to find, a 5 minute walk from the car.
There's other stuff up there on the Pass but I am not at liberty to divulge.

ps. BTW, Arnold may appear to be close to Yosemite, but it is not, by way of driving. You have to back to Angels Camp (20 min), south to Sonora (20 minutes) then onto YPN (an hour).

Look up Calaveras Dome here and on Mountain Project.
There is also a fair amount of climbing along Sonora Pass (Hwy 108) -- refer to "A climbers guide to Sonora Pass Highway" by Brad Young or "California Road Trip" by Slater

Some on line stuff is out of date. Spicer Terraces is the closest with at least 25 short routes betwen .6 and .10 and a couple of harder ones. Almost all have bolted anchors. Good cracks and a couple of face routes with one bolted sport wall with easy to moderate climbs. What kind of climbs are you looking for? PM me for some ok topos or directions.
