I'll go ahead and get it out of everyone's system....
NEITHER!!!

Now that that's out of the way, anyone have a preference between the two? Why?

The robots are rated a bit higher, but I'm slightly partial to single stems in general.

Thanks in advance

Although I've never owned and never will own RE cams, I did use a friends set years ago. I believe they were the durangos. I trusted them, the worked fine. They were fussy and very awkward in comparison to... anything else I've ever used. If you are going cheap and need a full set, go for it. The U-stem cam offers a lot of advantages, as does the single stem.
Any price difference? I'm assuming thats why you are asking. I would say you should figure out what you are looking at climbing before you choose one over the other.
Are you going to be placing cams in horizontal pockets/cracks? U-stem offers a lot of stability.
Are you going to be on routes that wander at all? A single stem is much more flexible over edges. It can also save on weight, I don't know what the specs are for RE cams.
Rather than asking about one specific cam over the other, ask what type of cam does what you need it to.

Edit: the ones I borrowed were the commets... no thumb loop. they kinda sucked.

I've got a couple of the old Trangos that became the Durangos, and they work fine. Solid, cheap pieces. I've never used the Robots.

I know this is not what you want to here, but I was in your position once and know what it is like. Don't get either of them. I have one Rock Empire Robot and it is a truly awful cam. Do I trust it less than my other cams, no. However, the fit, finish, and overall design are severely lacking. Get 4 good cams instead of 5 bad ones. In a year you won't remember what they cost anyway.

I have owned a couple of the Robots that I bought while I was still in school and broke. They seemed well made to me and held good. The problem I had with them is that their active range seems very small to me. To me this seemed to make them easier to overcam and they were often difficult for my seconds to remove. I have never used the Durangos so I can't comment there but I'd double check the camming range to make sure it is still what the Trango cams were.

Save some cash and buy a good quality cam to begin with.
