im livin in japan now, but in april im thinking about spending some time in thailand...ive been doing a lot of reading on the internet and whatnot...but i want to know from rc members: is going to thailand by myself a good idea if A. my main interest is in bouldering, and B. besides shoes, chalk and harness, i wont bring any gear...
does it still make sense to go and if so where?

by the way, if anyone is thinking about an april trip to thailand, i would love to have a climbing partner or partners...and im in tokyo until then so if anybody is coming here i would gladly show you the *scene* here too

April is about the worst time you could go to thailand: it is the hottest month! and I am already sweating like hell and it is cool december.....

swisslady's absolutely right, it'll be mighty hot in April but then again if it gets too hot just take a dip in the free pool that is otherwise known as the Andaman sea.
As for partners, if worse comes to worse and you can't find anyone, you can always hire a guide for about Baht 1,500 a day including gears. Probably a good idea too as they'll know which routes are in good shape or not.

For bouldering head over to Ko Tao. The guy that runs the cooking school over there has written an excellent guide for the area. And as a bonus - fantastic scuba diving on your days off.
You can also hang out at Ton Sai at Railae and easily find yourself a partner there.
have fun! I want to go back.

Regarding Railay itself (the only place I've climbed in Thailand), the bouldering opportunities are fairly limited- the focus really is on roped climbing.

Finding partners is simple. Climbers are everywhere!
Cheapest bungalow eith shared bathroom is about $2.50 U.S. per night. Very nice bungalows, private bath etc are about $9 per night. 2 people per bungalow is normal but I've seen 4 without a problem. These prices are for Ton Sai-Railey is more expensive
