Was looking to introduce a friend to top roping at Moss Island this weekend. I haven't been there in over ten years and have just read that the Mayor will no longer be issuing permits but you can still climb there (for free?). Can anyone clarify the legality and consequences of climbing at Moss Island and how local climbers feel about it?

Any suggestion on what length runners to bring for setting anchors? Also I see that there were some bolts put in last year, should climbers be using those or natural (tree, rock anchors)?

Any help or clarification would be appreciated! Thanks!

Since RC.com is only good for Beta I'll give it a shot. LOL

Honestly here, the island is open to climbing and has been for a few decades. Just go climb. I'll handle the mayor if there is a problem. WinkThere won't be a problem, trust me. Some of us local climbers are there daily.

Bring a length of webbing, some dbl length slings and some static if you have it. It all depends on the grade you want to climb and where on the island you will be at. Use the new anchors that were so graciously put in if you can. They were installed in great locations with quality stuff. Try not to extend back to the tree line. I've climbed everything from the 10+ range down as well as put up some routes and there are only a few where trees need to be used. Those routes being closer to the lock.
Hope this helps.

I was at the city hall last Fall, and I was told that the only difference is that they can't get emergency services out there because of the bridge. So, you're on your own if something happens.

That statement that emergency services could not get over the bridge has been retracted.
They can.
