I can't help with Mexico and Canada, but here's a segment from an interview I did with Access Fund ED, Brady Robinson.
In reply to: Jay: How many members do you have? Brady: Well, we’ve got about 15,000. Jay: That’s almost… shameful. Brady: Well, if you want to actually drill into it… How many of them are actually paid up? It’s a little over 10,000. So, yeah, exactly. We usually say we have about 15,000 members and affiliates. Depending on whose numbers you trust, the Outdoor Industry Association will tell you there’s about 1.6 million climbers in the country. If you talk to the industry people, they will tell you that the hardcore enthusiasts are probably around half a million or a little more. So, we have about 1-2% of the people who actually benefit from the work we do who are members. |

1.6 million climbers in the US? They must have included anyone who's ever climbed a flight of stairs or climbed out of bed in the morning...

I've seen estimates as high as 2 million. I believe this number includes every Cub Scout, Sunday School, and birthday party held at a climbing wall. Thank goodness these folks cover much of the actual expense of providing gyms for those of us who train in them.
If there were 2 million active outdoor climbers, volume purchasing could reduce the cost of equipment. Most of us who currently climb would likely choose to do more geocaching.
Note: I have never done ANY geocaching. I probably misspelled the word.

Yeah it totallty depends on what you consider to be a climber. If you're talking about people who climb at least semi- regularly, own their own gear, and climb without a guide, and climb OUTSIDE.....I would wager 500K. if you count the people who may do it once or twice a year, then double that.

There's a few, but most of the people who climb here commute in from overseas.

I would argue that Canadian and Mexican climbers do approximately live in the USA. They certainly do compared with, say, European and Australian climbers.

As a resident of New Jersey, I definitely live in America. You could probably say that any climber living in Bermuda, a US protectorate, approximately lives in America.
Or perhaps someone who is brain dead but on life support approximately lives in America, but odds are that they aren't climbing very much.
