definetly more mental than physical. ill agree with the 80% mental, 20% physical breakdown. although, i will say that if you dont have a certain level of fitness, then it will be harder to plod your way up there, especially if youre leading. i know that if i havent climbed for a while then i find it quite difficult to get back into the physical side of things.

Same situation here with me. You gotta keep at it or you start to decline.

I think it is like 60/40 physical to mental. I mean you have to be in perty good shape to be able to climb but you also have to be able to think you can and belive in your self.

The more I climb the more I realize it's a mental game....my mind says I can't when I can. It's my choice to listen or not...

Having climbed for only a few months, one of the most gratifying aspects of this sport is that I have realized that plateaus in my climbing ability are quickly overcome by simply "learning" or applying new techniques--i.e., improving the "mental" focus and "thinking" aspect.

Another example would be climbing steep granite walls by smearing and trusting your foot to hold after careful placement and by shifting your weight onto it. The uncertain/tentative climber who would be afraid to place all his weight on the foot might invariably slip because he/she has not placed enough downward force to supply adequate friction.

I honestly don't think my physical strength has improved as much as my brain has when it comes to climbing. At least early on, in my brief experience, I'll have to say that the learning curve has been very gratifying, and I'm pleasantly surprised to see how much technique and the mind play a big role.

climbing is a beautiful sports/leisure that acquire you to have power, technique, be flexible, stamina, footwork etc...But all those must be control with a good, focus mental in order for it to work in harmony.

I think its a 50-50 trade off. When ever i am about to try a redpoint of a route that i have been working on for a while it makes me think. Climb FAST...Climb FLUID...Climb CONFIDENT...and then i say to my self...GET UP THIS SH*T!!! thats about 50% of what it takes me to get up that route. The other 50% is the power...endurance and strength and technique thats going to help the other. its not mind over matter. Its mind helping the matter...

more mental. if you didn;t think you could do it in the first place, you'd be at home crotcheting mittens for your mountainclimbing 2nd cousin...

it's about cracking ur brain cracking ur brain...cracking ur brain.. : .... fell off, then cracking ur brain again, then cracking again, again... : then only cracking ur bone...

so to me, it's more to the power of brain, how u think, how u make urself comfortable with the nature of the rocks. but that's very much depends to ur strength too. sometime i just feel like, oo gosh, i know how to finish this, if only i got the power to jump higher...ahh just a lil bit more.

d4mn, i wanna go back to that route, i shud finish it this time... :

"sometime i just feel like, oo gosh, i know how to finish this, if only i got the power to jump higher...ahh just a lil bit more."

correct me if i was wrong. cos it crossed my mind just now that there are solutions to that. hmm, just be creative, perhaps another route, perhaps i shud move my feet like that, like this, lock my body there ,put my feet a bit higher, then perhaps i can reach it..hmmmm. yeah, it's the power of mental, BRAIN. think more, think harder. techniques..

it's torturing u know, but it's worth it, and it's fun and worth more than i can say. i wouldnt mind to spend my time on it =]
